Department

The Online Technology Group (OTG) within Future Media is responsible for the operation and management of the BBC’s online, mobile and connected TV infrastructure. This includes media streaming, web platforms and network & distribution channels for all digital media. The department is divided into:

1. Operations – responsible for the smooth operation of all distribution channels, including web applications
2. Service – responsible for service delivery and ensuring we meet customer expectations
3. Platform – responsible for architecture, technical design and software engineering functions that ensure the various platforms (web, mobile, iTV, streaming, etc.) remain current and effective.
4. Architects – responsible for the design and governance of the platform
5. Projects – responsible for the delivery of new and/or enhanced functionality onto the platform

Role

You will be joining the existing DBA Team within Operations, who are responsible for the support of a number of databases, principally on Oracle and MySQL platforms, on Linux, in addition, a small number of MSSQL and PostgreSQL databases. You will become involved in databases throughout their lifecycle from project inception to ongoing support.

Requirements

Essential Skills
• An understanding of Oracle 10g and/or MySQL 5.x gained through running critical systems;
• Management of multiple schemas through system development, test and live environments;
• Experience with MySQL Enterprise Monitoring, or Oracle OEM Solutions;
• Experience with MySQL Replication, or Oracle Data Guard Replication;
• Methodical and accurate while delivering to daily deadlines;
• Systematic approach to identifying faults and pursuing paths to resolution;
• Experience of specifying and installing new solutions;
• Ability to foresee relevant issues and assist in proposing possible solutions;

Desirable Skills
• Experience with Oracle RAC;
• Experience with management of Microsoft SQL server;
• Experience with management of PostgreSQL;
• Experience of project management processes;
• Experience of other monitoring packages such as Zenoss, Nagios and HP Openview;
• Experience of Unix Scripting;
• Good working knowledge of, and confidence administering on Linux platforms
