Senior Lecturer/ Researcher or Associate Professor in Water Resources Management, Delft, Netherlands

The Integrated Water Systems and Governance Department conducts research and provides post- graduate education and training to professionals in the fields of integrated water resources assessment and control, hydraulic engineering, hydrology/hydrogeology, various fields related to aquatic ecosystems and limnology, irrigation and drainage, navigation and hydropower, port and coastal engineering, and floods, droughts and pollution. The department is organized into four scientific chair groups: The Integrated Water Systems and Governance Department consists of the following Chair Groups: Water Management, Water Governance, Knowledge and Capacity Development, Hydroinformatics, each headed by a professor.
As part of the Integrated Water Systems and Governance Department, the Water Management chair group offers postgraduate education and professional training courses, initiates and conducts research activities, and provides capacity building and advisory services in the fields of water resources management, water services management and environmental planning. The chair group acknowledges that the most pressing contemporary challenges in the water sector concern issues that encompass physical and non-physical aspects simultaneously. Innovations will have to deal with the two-way dynamic of such challenges and therefore the interplay between the physical technological, social, institutional and economic processes involving water systems needs to be better understood. The Water Management chair group is looking for a Senior Lecturer/ Researcher or Associate Professor in Water Resources Management.
Responsibilities
The staff member is expected to develop theory and methods for integrated water resources management and apply them under different situations to support planning processes, policy development, program and project formulation and implementation. He or she is competent in different planning approaches, at different spatial and temporal scales and in incorporating technical, economic and institutional aspects. The development and application of quantitative water resources models, role plays and/or planning tools in teaching, research and capacity building endeavours will be among the responsibilities. Knowledge of watershed processes, groundwater-surface water interaction, GIS and Remote Sensing applications, and/or spatial planning would be an advantage.
The staff member will have to develop and teach in his/her area of expertise at post-graduate level and will be expected to supervise MSc, PhD and Post-Doc fellows. He or she will also initiate, develop, acquire and implement research and capacity building projects in the field of water resources management, in particular in the Global South. The staff member must be prepared to carry out short-term missions abroad.
Competences
The successful candidate: has a PhD degree in and a record of scientific publications and conducting research in the field of water resources management;
  • has a record in acquiring and leading multi-disciplinary projects;
  • brings a professional network in the field of water resources management;
  • has teaching experience at (post-)graduate level and good didactical skills;
  • has working experience in developing countries and/or countries in transition;
  • is fluent in English, and preferably also in Spanish and/or French;
  • is motivated to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment.
Terms of employment
This position is, in principle, a permanent one, however, the first two contracts offered are always temporary, and only after of 4 years a permanent contract will be considered. The position is based in Delft, The Netherlands. A competitive salary for Senior Lecturer/ Researcher (starting scale10/ end scale 11) or Associate Professor (starting scale 13/ end scale 14) CAO Dutch Universities) is offered depending on qualifications and experience in accordance with the conditions of employment for Dutch Universities. The appointment implies entry into the Netherlands' Civil Service Pension Fund (ABP). Candidates must be prepared to carry out long- and short-term missions abroad.
