Shell is looking for a Speechwriter/Editor who will be an important member of the global Editorial team in the Creative Development Centre of Excellence. 
The Editorial team is staffed by professional writers and editors with backgrounds in journalism, speechwriting and corporate communications. 
The team writes speeches, op-eds and external articles for the Shell Executive Committee, edits the company’s major annual reports, manages editorial content for Shell.com and produces stories for the Inside Energy innovation app. It uses compelling storytelling to convey clear, consistent messaging at the corporate level that ensures understanding for an external audience of Shell’s strategy, strengths and objectives.
Responsibilities:
  • Play a key role in Shell's speech writing programme, content generation and messaging to create impact with key audiences.
  • Distil and communicate key strategies and messages from Shell leadership in line with communications campaigns and objectives.
  • Help identify and secure important speaking opportunities globally for Executive Committee members; reach key audiences as part of an integrated communications plan.
  • Craft additional compelling content for distribution via a variety of communications channels to build support among external audiences for Shell’s activities.
  • To research, craft and edit speeches and talking points for Executive Committee members to deliver at high-profile, strategic venues, such as management/leadership/industry conferences.
  • To conceive, research and write op-eds and stories that help bring Shell’s strategy alive for external audiences, in support of the company’s overall communications strategy, for distribution via multiple communications channels, including: external publications, shell.com, the INSIDE ENERGY iPad application and social media.
Requirements:
  • Proven ability to research, craft and edit business speeches and op-eds, working with senior leaders.
  • Sound research methodology – familiarity with information sources, capacity to search efficiently.
  • Perceptive and diplomatic interview skills, eliciting key information from internal and external sources.
  • Ability to distil complex information into memorable and easily understandable messages, lifting out key interest points and relating to specific audience interest and needs/relevance.
  • Ability to create prose designed to create maximum impact when delivered as the spoken word.
  • Demonstrated ability to tell stories that engage readers/listeners.
  • A sound grasp of energy and/or process industry public issues, and the ability to articulate Shell views in relation to these issues.
  • Ability to develop powerful visual aids in support of key messages/storylines.
Qualifications and Competencies
  • Degree level education. Proven experience in speechwriting for executives in multinational organisations. Work experience in an international corporate environment.
  • Good knowledge of the energy business and relevant industry sectors.
  • Ability to cope with a number of tasks simultaneously. High degree of enthusiasm and curiosity.
  • Open, flexible and creative approach. Results-focused and able to solve issues and problems quickly and independently.
  • Journalism experience desired.
  • Good team-working, communication and motivational skills. Adapt at working across borders, with people from different cultures and at different levels, especially senior management.
  • Able to act as an effective “thought partner” with senior leaders, contributing insight and analysis.
  • Effective intellectual sparring partner able to graciously push back when necessary to ensure a high-quality final product.
