The King's Fund Director of Policy

The King's Fund is an independent charity working to improve health and health care in England.   Our vision is for the best possible care to be available to all.  The Fund is at the forefront of debate on health and social care, is highly regarded across the sector, and engages directly with those who are able to have most influence on the health and social care system, including ministers, patient leaders, clinicians and NHS leaders.   The Fund’s aims are to help shape policy and practice through research and analysis; develop individuals, teams and organisations in order to improve care; promote understanding of the health and social care system; and bring people together to learn, share knowledge and debate.
At a time of great change within the UK health care system, The King’s Fund is recruiting a new Director of Policy.   Working closely with the Chief Executive and members of the Senior Management Team, the Director of Policy will help to develop the strategic direction of the Fund.  He/she will be responsible for the development and implementation of a programme of work for the Policy Directorate, to be delivered by a team of staff, associates and visiting fellows.
The successful candidate will have a detailed knowledge of public policy, together with an understanding of how public bodies develop and implement policy and of the mechanisms that can be used to influence that process.   Knowledge of the distinctive roles that government, independent bodies, public and private health care providers, and consumer/patient groups play in improving the quality and efficiency of health care, would be an advantage.    In addition, strong communication skills are essential. Candidates should be able to evidence experience of speaking to the media and on public platforms, excellent writing skills and an ability to build relationships with senior figures across sectors.
While a broad understanding of health care policy is highly relevant, The King’s Fund would be interested in hearing from candidates from other fields if they can demonstrate an appreciation of the issues and challenges facing the Fund, and the UK health care system as a whole.
The King’s Fund is committed to equal opportunities in all its activities and appointments will be determined solely on merit.  Applications are welcomed form all sections of the community including those from minority ethnic groups and those with disabilities.
