The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking an Assistant Researcher with a high level of commitment and analytical skills to support research activities on the isolation of the Ry gene and other R genes from potato for late blight and virus resistance.

The position: The Assistant Researcher position will be based in Lima, Peru (La Molina) and will report to the Leader of the Genomics and Biotechnology Global Science Program. The objective of the position is to contribute to the formulation of strategies for the isolation of the R1adg gene and other R genes from potato for PVY and PLRV resistance in collaboration with other relevant CIP scientists. The end result is to formulate and document the team’s findings in the form of an internal discussion paper and potential publications.
Duties and responsibilities:
  • Conduct PVY and PLVR resistance tests and bioinformatics analysis.
  • Assume the responsibility of leading research activities related to this project
Continue the development of strategies for the isolation of the R1adg gene from potato for PLVR resistance
  • Develop new strategies for isolating new R genes from potato for LB resistance with other relevant scientists
  • Participate in basic data analysis and discussion
  • Collaborate in preparation of data reports and publications derived from this activity.
Selection criteria:
  • Bachelor’s degree (thesis completed) in Biology or Agronomy.
  • At least 3 years of experience and exposure to molecular biology techniques, such as   DNA and ARN plant extraction and quantification,
  • Knowledge of microsatellite markers, such as CAPS and SCAR.
  • Knowledge of sequencing analysis programs
  • Knowledge of genetic and physical mapping
  • Demonstrated ability to complex analysis, problem solving, and capability to work independently.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines and work in multicultural environment.
  • Advanced written and oral communication skills in English are required.
  • Strong communications and organizational skills.
Conditions: Employment contract will be for a one-year term with three months probation period, with the possibility for renewal. CIP prides itself on its collegial and supportive working environment, which allows space for personal and professional growth.
