Engineers: Broadband Research (X2)
CSIR Meraka Institute has vacancies for two Engineers who will contribute to the CSIR's success with regard research into broadband technology.
Senior Engineer
About the job:
The incumbent will be responsible assisting with broadband policy and strategy development.
Key responsibilities:
• Develop and contribute to broadband business cases, strategies, and plans, especially for rural and under-serviced areas.
• Identify and develop opportunities for ICT RDI in the broadband sector.
• Provide technical leadership to younger engineers and give input to direction for teams in broadband R&D.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
• A minimum of a BEng degree in electronics or computer engineering.
• It would be an advantage to have a postgraduate qualification in telecommunications/policy/strategy or engineering.
• At least two to five years’ telecommunications experience and in particular, experience in policy formulation would be an advantage.
• Five to seven years’ experience in engineering would be preferable.
Behavioural and functional competencies:
• Good technical problem-solving and interpersonal skills are essential.
• A strong analytical capability and a scientific approach to problem-solving.
• Enthusiastic and self-motivated.
• Independent worker and team player.
• Conceptual problem-definition and problem-solving skills.
• Have coordination skills to work with clients and subject matter experts in various disciplines.
• Ability to transfer knowledge to engineers and analysts.

About the job:
The incumbent will be responsible for facilitating client/stakeholder discussions to identify user requirement specifications and concept development within the field of broadband technology.
Key responsibilities:
• Scoping, requirements analysis, architecture, verification and validation, client liaison, and workshop facilitation.
• Perform conceptual problem-definition and problem-solving duties.
• Lead performance analysis and validate models for trade-off studies.
• Coordinate task resources with clients and subject matter experts in ICT and application domains (e.g. education, health, government, etc.).
• Transfer knowledge to engineers and analysts.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
• A minimum of a BEng degree in systems engineering.
• Preferably with two to three years’ experience in engineering.
• Experience in the telecommunications field would be an added advantage.
Behavioural and functional competencies:
• Traditional systems engineering: Scoping, requirements analysis, architecture, verification and validation and systems engineering management.
• Good technical problem-solving and interpersonal skills are essential.
