BACKGROUND
This position involves liaising with and providing support to IUCN’s Species Survival Commission (SSC), with a focus on the plant, fungi and marine SSC Specialist Groups; supporting fundraising by developing project proposals, in particular projects involving the assessment of priority plant groups for The IUCN Red List; carrying out training in all aspects of The IUCN Red List; communicating and providing support to all SSC Specialist Groups and maintaining links to key IUCN Members and regional staff.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Supporting the IUCN Red List
• Lead and/or contribute to Global Species Programme (GSP) programmatic work, especially to develop and fundraise for projects to assess plant and fungi species for The IUCN Red List
• Work in close association with GSP staff, SSC members, IUCN Members and regional offices to develop and support priority assessment projects
• Support the implementation and further development of the IUCN Red List Training Strategy, with a particular focus on the use of the IUCN Red List Training Centre.
• Provide training in workshops and via other means on the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria
• Provide ongoing training support in the use of the Red List and Species Information Service (SIS)
2. Programme development and fundraising
This position is involved in programmatic work for three areas within IUCN: the Global Species Programme, the Species Survival Commission and the wider IUCN networks for implementing the 2013-16 thematic programme areas. A significant contribution to fundraising for both the GSP and SSC network is expected.
• Contribute to writing, implementing, and monitoring the Species Strategic Plan
• Contribute to IUCN’s work on its major programmatic areas by bringing species knowledge, especially from the SSC network, into other IUCN initiatives
• Implement various projects and initiatives, such as the production of publications, policy initiatives or on-the-ground conservation projects, in collaboration with SSC members
• Help develop and implement an overall funding strategy for both GSP and SSC priorities
• Fundraise and manage relevant finances for both GSP and SSC work. This will involve reactive and proactive grant-writing.
3. Support to the SSC Network in collaboration with the Global Species Programme
• Manage IUCN GSP interaction with SSC Specialist Groups, especially the plant-, fungi- and marine-species groups
• Provide support to the SSC Plant Conservation Sub Committee, SSC Marine Conservation Sub Committee and others as needed
• Strengthen and support the work of the SSC Specialist Groups
o Lead or support Specialist Group projects, initiatives, and meetings
o Facilitate internal communication and networking between SSC and GSP
• Manage relationships and produce relevant deliverables with key partners
• Communicate knowledge, expertise and advice from SSC to other IUCN programmes
• Respond to general requests to the Global Species Programme
4. Internal communications
• Maintain strong relationships between the GSP, the SSC and IUCN’s regional and country offices
5. External communications and representational duties
• Collaborate with relevant staff on IUCN communication products: including writing, editing and helping with publications and other media requests.
• Represent GSP and SSC at major conferences and meetings
• Participate in the IUCN delegation at major meetings of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and represent IUCN at intersessional CBD meetings, particularly on plant conservation policy
• Meet with potential donors and maintain good relations with existing donors
6. Responsibilities over people
• Supervise, as needed, GSP Junior Professional and volunteer staff working on SSC-related issues

REQUIREMENTS
• An advanced degree (or research equivalent) in botany / plant biological sciences and significant practical field experience preferably including outside of Europe and North America
• Broad knowledge of biodiversity conservation issues
• A good understanding of the practical aspects of plant conservation actions and policy in the context of broader biodiversity conservation
• Proven success in writing proposals and raising funds
• Strong technical writing skills
• An ability to work co-operatively with other staff, members of the SSC voluntary network and other organisations
• A good command of English (and Spanish and/or French), both written and spoken
• Personal commitment to species conservation and the objectives of IUCN SSC
• A willingness to travel widely and frequently on IUCN business
SALARY
The gross annual salary for this position is in the range from CHF 80'640 to CHF 100'800, subject to deductions for social security contributions and second-pillar pension, and before tax.
