Chair in Economics of Health Protection and Public Health

London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine -Faculty of Public Health & Policy

University of London
The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine is seeking to appoint a Chair in the Economics of Health Protection and Public Health. This post is a collaborative venture with the Health Protection Agency (HPA) (who will become Public Health England from 1 April 2013), who are providing the funding, and the post-holder will have an honorary contract with the HPA.  The successful applicant will be expected to work closely with both institutions.  The post will be located in the Department of Social and Environmental Health Research of the Faculty of Public Health and Policy, but will be expected to draw on relevant expertise and develop close working relationships, as appropriate, within other Departments and Faculties of the School.  The applicant is also expected to spend approximately half of their time at the HPA Colindale to draw on expertise and facilitate joint working with colleagues based there.
Applicants will join a flourishing team of health economists and staff from complementary disciplines in the Faculty of Public Health and Policy, and should bring an international reputation in relevant areas of economics.  Successful candidates will have interests in economic evaluation and cost-effectiveness analysis, especially as applied to health protection related to such areas as communicable disease and environmental health, and evaluating complex public health interventions which cross multiple sectors.  Within environmental health, specific areas might include, but are not limited to, housing, flood risks, cold weather responses, extreme weather events, chemical and radiation hazard responses, and adaptation to climate change.
The successful candidate will be keen to maximise the advantages of bringing together the strengths of the HPA and LSHTM, to create a world class programme of work in this area. As part of this appointment, two HPA-funded PhD studentships are offered, with topics and students to be determined by the applicant and to be jointly supervised by the applicant and a member of HPA staff, as well as additional part-time resource from a current staff member within the Department.
This is a full time appointment without duration. Salary will be in the range of £60,000 - £80,000 per annum, inclusive.  Relocation expenses will be payable in accordance with School policy.
