Department

The Irish Language unit produces a range of content which is distributed on Radio, Television and on the Web. Output includes magazine programming as well as programmes and a website for learners of Irish, both at school students and adults.

Role

As Assistant Editor, Irish Language you'll lead and co-ordinate the development of in-house Irish language output across all platforms - radio, television, online and new media.     Working with the Executive Producer, Irish Language, you will take the lead in the creative development and delivery of Irish language output which meets the needs of audiences and which is aligned with BBC Northern Ireland's overall commissioning strategy. As well as supporting the Executive Producer when required in the commissioning rounds for Irish language from development to delivery, fostering a creative environment that encourages new ideas and thinking both in terms of output and ways of working.   You'll assist in the delivery and management of all Irish language in-house content setting the highest editorial standards.     You will also executive produce a range of projects from external suppliers, as agreed with the Executive Producer Irish Language, when required.   In all of these functions you will report to Executive Producer, Irish Language, BBC Northern Ireland while working closely and collaboratively with the Head of Radio Ulster and Executive Editor, Digital, Knowledge and learning, BBC NI.

Requirements

You should have excellent written and spoken Irish with extensive production experience across a range of media.   You'll demonstrate evidence of excellent editorial skills and sound judgement gained across a range of platforms and have the ability and enthusiasm to work across a range of output.  As well having successfully managed a production team you'll possess the ability to inspire confidence and creativity in a production team, with the ability to nuture talent and the ability to deal confidently and effectively with issues of underperformance.    Furthermore, you'll have the imagination and an enthusiasm for generating new ideas, particularly those with the widest possible audience appeal.   With a clear understanding of the potential audiences for Irish language output and how to gain insight into their particular and varying needs.   As well as having knowledge and understanding of the wider media industry context and how it impacts on BBC Northern Ireland and particularly on Irish language output.   In addition you'll have a good understanding of new media platforms and of the potential for these to add value to the core output and to help engage more fully with target audiences. You'll also have good organisational and planning skills and the ability to co-ordinate senior duties alongside existing programme roles. As well as a proven track record in the careful management of budgets.
