The European Patent Office in Vienna is seeking a Co-ordinator*, Business use of patent information
in Directorate Patent Information Promotion (D 5.4.2)
Contract until 31.12.2014
(extension possible, but the total contract term cannot exceed 36 months)

The Patent Information Promotion directorate helps people to use patent information more effectively by providing customer support services for all users (ranging from commercial suppliers to national patent offices, professional patent searchers and infrequent users), publishing information for the public on our products and services, offering training on how to use patent information, communicating interactively with the public and collecting user feedback for product enhancements and developments.
Within the directorate, the "Business use" section manages products designed for the use of patent information in the economics world, like PATSTAT and IPScore. This includes answering user queries, managing product enhancements and co-operating with academia. The goal is to support decision-making in business or politics by using patent information data and services. The tasks of the team also include promoting and presenting these products and services to interested circles, e.g. at conferences and in internal and external meetings.

Main duties

  1. Publications and information (e.g. brochures, seminars, lectures) about the business use of patent information
  2. Application management, customer services and establishing and analysing requirements for IPscore (patent evaluation tool) and PATSTAT (statistics tool)
  3. Market surveys and monitoring of sources available (e.g. applications software, sample cases, reports); incorporation of other products for patent management, evaluation and statistics and for visualisation and business intelligence.
  4. Co-operating with other European and international organisations and commercial providers
  5. Running tenders for products and services (including bid evaluation and analysis)
  6. Managing a team whose task is to promote the business use of patent information.

The ideal candidate will have

  •   excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
  •   ability to work accurately under pressure
  •   strong organisational skills (such as the ability to prioritise tasks and to "multi-task" within tight deadlines)
  •   staff management skills
  •   attention to detail, quality consciousness
  •   a customer-oriented approach
  •   sense of initiative and the capacity to work independently
  •   good knowledge of office software and the ability to get acquainted with new tools very quickly.

It will be an advantage to have

  • good knowledge in the field of patent statistics
  • good knowledge of business- and economics-related subjects
  • good knowledge of patent information products
  • experience in supporting internal or external customers
  • good knowledge of database query languages, e.g. SQL

Minimum qualifications  

Diploma of completed studies at university level or - in exceptional cases - equivalent professional experience. Excellent knowledge of one official language (English, French or German) and ability to understand the other two.
Applications from candidates with excellent knowledge of one official language but able to understand only one of the other two may be considered, if they are willing to learn the third before starting work.
The successful candidate will be selected on the basis of qualifications, supplemented as appropriate by interviews and/or tests.

Interviews will be held in Vienna in calendar week 21.
