The Person and the Job:
If you have a university degree in a relevant field and a minimum of ten years’ experience as a generator of content in a relevant communications field, then you may be the person that the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) (www.iwmi.cgiar.org) is looking for to fill the position of Communications and Outreach Manager. You will lead IWMI’s communications activities, typically including media campaigns on topical issues, generating publicity for the Institute and supervising the creation of attractive content for a range of media. Also, as the manager of the communications unit, you will be responsible for supervising staff in the Communications Unit at IWMI’s headquarters and supporting communications staff in the regional offices. You will be based at IWMI’s headquarters and will report to the Director, Communications and Marketing.

You will:
- develop and implement communications and outreach strategies as part of the broader marketing, information and knowledge management strategies of IWMI;
- manage the communications staff at IWMI headquarters;
- support, advise and monitor communications staff in the regional offices;
- develop and implement campaigns on selected issues/messages;
- coordinate IWMI’s media outreach strategy. This will include identifying promising stories, writing media releases, developing press kits and organizing media conferences;
- build relationships with media outlets, PR companies and other communications partners;
- produce corporate materials. This will require identifying suitable outputs, interviewing scientists, translating research findings into practical information for a range of target audiences from policymakers to NGOs, development agencies, donors and others. These outputs will be in a variety of formats, including written material for online publication, policy briefs, issue briefs, success stories, Annual Report and presentations, video/audio stories or interviews, photography and info-graphics;
- identify, brief and manage contracts with videographers, photographers, graphic artists or other writers;
- manage and develop IWMI’s social media presence;
- organize IWMI’s representation at events; and
- collaborate with other CGIAR centers and contribute to the collective communication goals of the CGIAR communications and marketing group.
You must possess:
- a university degree in a relevant field;
- minimum of ten years’ experience as a generator of content in a relevant communications field;
- solid experience as a writer and the ability to grasp scientific and technical concepts and communicate them clearly to various audiences;
- the ability to be a positive team player with good interpersonal skills and the ability to work with people from a wide variety of cultures;
- fluency in English to the level of a native speaker, with excellent writing and editing skills; and
- good organizational skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks.
It would be a significant advantage if you have:
• experience in writing on scientific and development issues.
This is an internationally recruited position with a competitive salary and benefits package, which includes a housing allowance, transport, education, shipping assistance, annual home leave, retirement and health insurance package. IWMI’s policy is to appoint staff initially on three-year contracts which are subject to renewal, depending on performance and the Institute’s needs.
