Public Information Consultant - WFP - UN World Food Programme


The World Food Programme (WFP) is the world's largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide. We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Public
Information Consultant, which will be based in our Liaison Office in New York, USA. The contract will be for an initial period of 6 months.
Under the direct supervision and guidance of the Senior Public Information Officer, the Consultant will be responsible for creating, initiating and managing public information campaigns, with the overall aim of raising WFP’s visibility and enhancing efforts to raise resources from governmental and private sectors in the US.
Specific duties include:
  •  Liaise with the news media, provide information to reporters and write news releases;
  •  Initiate and manage visibility campaigns in all forms of media and public forums;
  •  Place Public Service Announcements (PSAs) and ads through appropriate channels;
  •  Manage key relationships with celebrities and leverage them into fundraising opportunities;
  •  Provide support to web and social media activities;
  •  Create, initiate and manage joint-marketing campaigns
  •  Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications & Experience Required
  •  University degree, preferably at the advanced level, in Journalism, International Relations, Public Relations, Communications and other related fields;
  •  At least 3 years of relevant experience in journalism or communications;
  •  Familiarity with international affairs and multimedia skills;
  •  Strong interpersonal, strategic, tactical and organizational skills;
  •  Excellent communication and writing skills in English; knowledge of another UN official language (Arabic, French, Spanish, Russian or Chinese) or Portuguese (one of WFP’s working languages) is an asset;
  •  Ability to make oral presentations to press, interest groups and private sector representatives;
  •  Knowledge of tools for reaching the news media;
  •  Knowledge of WFP and the UN system is desirable.
