Regional Director, Southern California

Summary

As part of REDF’s senior leadership team, the Regional Director leads REDF’s expansion strategy in Southern California including oversight of REDF’s organizational presence in Southern California (including greater Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego). As the head of REDF’s two-year-old Los Angeles Office, the Regional Director will be the public face of REDF in Southern California, spending significant time networking with key stakeholders, establishing partnerships, and fostering the growth and development of a social enterprise ecosystem in the region. The Director will also develop a strategy, and pilot models, for replicating and scaling REDF’s reach in new locations. 

Additionally the Regional Director will help develop REDF’s strategy for new forms of social enterprise financing and capital deployment, and oversee local REDF pilot initiatives. 

Reporting to the Managing Director, but working closely with colleagues responsible for REDF’s Portfolio, fundraising and communications, the Regional Director will leverage REDF’s portfolio organization relationships within Southern California as needed, and contribute to fund development and communications activities in the region. 

Regional Expansion 

• Oversee the expansion strategy of REDF in Southern California, including developing and supporting strategies that extend REDF’s brand and influence the regional social enterprise “ecosystem” 
• Oversee the partnership strategy for REDF in Southern California; cultivate key Southern California stakeholders to advance REDF’s strategic goals 
• Lead the development and strategy for expanding REDF’s model to other jurisdictions in California, as appropriate 
• Lead the research, development, and build out of REDF’s strategy for meeting social enterprise financing needs, including partnerships and/or methodologies for deploying low-cost capital 
• Oversee REDF’s involvement in new social enterprise financing initiatives, such as Social Impact Bonds, including structuring partnerships and managing proposed interventions 
• Lead the research of new, innovative financial instruments and mechanisms that can be utilized by REDF and social enterprises, with a focus on scalability and expansion 

Programs, Fundraising, and Communications 

• Help develop REDF’s relationships with its portfolio organizations in Southern California, including connecting portfolio organizations to REDF’s other strategic initiatives as appropriate 
• Assist with developing REDF’s pipeline of nonprofit organizations for portfolio or other relationships 
• Assist the Director of Development and Strategic Advancement to identify and cultivate Southern California funding opportunities in support of REDF’s development strategy 
• Assist Managing Directors with development and execution of other new REDF program / practice areas 

REDF Leadership 

• Act as REDF’s Los Angeles office senior leader, building office culture, assisting with local recruiting, coaching/mentoring local staff, and overseeing the budget 
• Provide input into REDF’s overall strategy and management. Represent LA office on REDF’s Strategic Leadership Team 

Essential Qualifications 

• Knowledge of the Los Angeles or Southern California markets, including strong existing relationships within Southern California business, nonprofit and/or philanthropic networks 
• 7+ years of relevant, progressive work experience in finance, small business management, and/or management consulting, including 3+ years of experience working with mission-driven organizations, especially in a grant making capacity 
• Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills 
• Demonstrated ability to create a cohesive strategy, and to design and implement a plan based on the strategy 
• In-depth knowledge of innovative financing practices, e.g., impact investing, Social Impact Bonds 
• Ability to work in a matrix organization 
• MBA or equivalent graduate degree 
• Strong people skills, including demonstrated supervisory, mentoring, and team-building experience 
• Effective written and oral communication skills 
• Strong project management and time management skills; highly organized and detail-oriented 
• Enjoy working independently, with some degree of flexibility and ambiguity 
• Enjoy working as part of a team, exchanging insights and following up on team members’ input 
• Skill working with Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint and ability to work extensively at a computer 
• PowerPoint and Excel modeling expertise 

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Physical Demands 

Position is considered sedentary and no unusual physical requirements are necessary to perform most daily tasks. Position requires extended period of sitting, with much of the work done at a computer workstation and telephone. Certain computer applications, programs, and documents may require an ability to differentiate colors, shapes, and symbols. Position requires the ability to drive an automobile independently (must have a valid CA driver’s license).
