RESEARCHER – CLIMATE CHANGE New Delhi, India


The person and the job
If you possess a PhD or equivalent academic qualifications in a field related to global change or agricultural development, and have at least three years of research experience, ideally in an interdisciplinary environment, you could be the person that the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is looking for. The position holder will report to the Regional Program Leader of the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) (http://ccafs.cgiar.org ) and will be based at the New Delhi Office of IWMI in India.
 
CCAFS is a ten-year strategic partnership emerging from a new collaboration between CGIAR, a global agriculture research partnership, and Future Earth. Through this collaboration, CCAFS brings together strategic research in agricultural science, development research, climate science and earth system science, to overcome the threats that a changing climate poses to food security, rural livelihoods and the environment. Led by the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), CCAFS taps into the collective expertise of all 15 CGIAR research centers and other thematic Research Programs from all around the world.
 
You will:
 
  • be responsible for managing and overseeing portfolio of CCAFS research activities in the region;
 
  • conduct research on climate risk management in rural areas of South Asia;
 
  • implement a capacity building and communication strategy in the region;
 
  • organize and contribute to workshops, meetings and training events;
 
  • assist the Research Program Leader in designing, implementing and monitoring research programs in the region across themes and scales;
 
  • represent CCAFS in national, regional and international meetings, and coordinate with other themes, regions and other CGIAR Centers;
 
  • write proposals, research reports and papers, and develop and communicate scientific results to a range of stakeholders; and
 
  • interact with the researchers, policymakers and other related stakeholders in South Asia to facilitate project implementation.
 
You must possess:
 
  • a PhD or equivalent academic qualifications in a field related to global change or agricultural development. Background in social sciences is preferred;
 
  • at least 3 years of research experience, ideally in an interdisciplinary environment;
 
  • experience in working with farming communities or with policymakers in developing countries;
 
  • an ability to conduct and monitor participatory action research in rural areas;
 
  • excellent writing and communication skills in English and one language of the Indo-Gangetic Plains region; and
 
  • excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to relate effectively with agricultural research/global change and development institutions at regional and/or international levels.
 
It would be useful if you had:
 
  • experience in modelling climate impacts on agriculture and/or databases, GIS and remote sensing;
 
  • understanding of climate-smart practices, such as nutrient management, water management, carbon management, agro-advisories, insurance and weather forecasting; and
 
  • sound knowledge of statistics, research methods, field surveys and the ability to handle large datasets.
 
This is an internationally recruited position with competitive salary and benefits package, which includes a housing allowance, transport, education, shipping assistance, annual home leave, retirement and health insurance package. This position is initially for a period of 3 years.
