TB Lab Manager at Ifakara Health Institute (IHI)


Reporting to: Branch Lab Manager/Project leader TB project
Duration: Contractual (2-year contract, renewable depending on the performance)
INSTITUTE OVERVIEW:
Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is a Tanzania based non-governmental Institute with a mission of developing and sustaining Health Research and Resource Institute capable of generating new knowledge and relevant information for public health policy and action. IHI is one of the leading research outfits in Africa maintaining collaboration with several other research Institutes in the world. Since its inception in 1957 IHI has been known both within and outside of Tanzania for its contributions in improving public health. For instance, in 2008, the Institute was recipient of the prestigious Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation for its contribution to the fight against malaria through research, training and dissemination of information for policy making. The Institute has over 1000 staff across seven sites in the country.
The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) in collaboration with Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) are looking for a manager of the TB Research Laboratory at the Bagamoyo Research and Training Centre (BRTC) in Tanzania. POSITION SUMMARY:
The ideal candidate for this position will manage and supervise all technical operations at the BSL 3 TB Research Laboratory of the Bagamoyo Research and Training Centre according to Good Clinical and Laboratory Practice (GCLP).
This position includes:
-Training, guidance and regular proficiency testing of designated laboratory personnel
-Developing, reviewing and maintaining of standard operating procedures
-Continuous quality control and assurance of all laboratory procedures
-Development and implementation of a safety and hygiene plan
-Interacting with study laboratory consultants and monitors
-Assisting the Head of Department with personnel management, budgets and laboratory finances
-Overseeing procurement and maintenance of equipment and consumables
-Active participation in the institute’s TB research work
Requirements:
• Degree in laboratory technology or higher degree
• Minimum of 3 years experience and extensive knowledge in TB diagnostic techniques (including: microscopy, liquid and solid media culture, DST, molecular biology) with proven technical proficiency
• Excellent management and inter-personal skills
• Experience in GCLP compliant medical research
• Self-motivated and highly focused attitude to work
• Computer proficiency
• Good verbal and written communication skills in English
• Review and lead the standard recruiting and hiring practices and procedures.
• Interview management and executive candidates.
MODE OF APPLICATION AND REMUNERATION
We offer a challenging position in an international research environment. The salary will be according to European standards. This is a full-time post and is offered for two years in the first instance.
