An authority on web usability you’ll make sure that everything about ba.com is designed with the customer in mind. You’ll have the opportunity to influence an iconic British brand in a dynamic, creative and challenging environment. Working within a small team liaising with developers, designers and other stakeholders (internal and external) this role is at the forefront of driving continuous improvement to British Airway’s website, ba.com, which has 7 million visits per month.
 
Reporting to the Manager, ba.com user experience and design within the Customer Department, you’ll get involved in looking at all aspects of the solution, ensuring quality and conformance to relevant standards and that the customer is at the heart of all that you do by delivering a truly satisfying user experience.

About the role

  • General expertise in all aspects of usability/website user experience
  • Ensure good user experience is achieved by applying best practice to all relevant development projects/small updates
  • Set up and manage processes for ensuring adequate oversight of ba.com changes
  • Define and enforce appropriate online standards
  • Support and direct others reviewing new developments
  • Act as information architect (UIA) as appropriate, producing site taxonomies, wireframes and page flows with the support and guidance of the lead UIA
  • Act as creative designer as appropriate, adding design to wireframes, elements of design, changes to existing designs etc with the support and guidance of the lead creative designer
  • Represent the UX manager as UX lead for Agile development projects
  • Participate in two-way coaching with colleagues to share the broader aspects of user experience
  • Awareness and understanding of business and customer goals to drive continuous improvement of ba.com
  • Excellent understanding of customer types and use of personas
  • Drive requirements for and provide ideas for new,/better/cheaper methods of obtaining customer insights
  • Integrate different methods of customer insights to enhance understanding of customer needs

About you

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following skills and capabilities:
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
  • Understanding of how different elements contribute to the total user experience (information architecture, creative design principles, copy, branding)
  • Ability to speedily and accurately assess website structure, application flow, or page design
  • A customer champion – demonstrate genuine empathy with the end user with ability to commission and translate research findings into improvements to the end user experience of ba.com
  • Represent British Airways at external agencies/suppliers meetings
  • Self-starter: active thought leadership on design, tools and processes
  • Sound understanding of online business principles
  • Team player with ability to coach and share skills
  • Effective planning and prioritising
  • Ability to link tactical updates to ba.com strategy
  • Flexible, ‘can-do’ approach – make it happen
  • Knowledge of e-commerce environment plus static information pages
  • Able to use prototype and design software
  • Work effectively within waterfall and agile development teams
  • Ability to quickly understand a design challenge, and quickly propose an approach
  • Participates in external UX communities, staying up to speed with new approaches and tools
  • Numerate: able to data mine and interpret relevant metrics

This role is based at British Airways HQ Waterside. Surrounded by 260 acres of parkland it includes many facilities, including a gym, bank, staff shop, Waitrose and hairdresser.
 
Travel to meetings in London and occasionally other locations in the UK and potentially overseas is required.
