WWF-Hong Kong, Director, Conservation

We are looking for a Director, Conservation who will be responsible for the development of the overall conservation strategy of WWF-Hong Kong to enhance the effectiveness of conservation in Hong Kong, South China and the region. The incumbent will also provide WWF-Hong Kong with the technical expertise, intellectual leadership and advice on conservation issues. The person oversees all conservation programmes by providing respective team heads with clear directions, orientation to the future and strategic visions.

Main responsibilities:
  • Develop and execute a conservation strategy that is impactful and locally relevant to Hong Kong and in doing so, drive to facilitate the organization’s vision of making Hong Kong being the greenest city in Asia.
  • Work closely with relevant departments, in particular Education, Fundraising and Communications to deliver maximum impact of programmes and ensure pre-determined outcomes for all are achieved.
  • Lead a team of technical experts to develop common policy positions, campaign strategies and technical messaging, and engage with key institutions to ensure that WWF-Hong Kong is known, respected and influential in key fora.
  • Ensure a consistency and coherence to the internal and external delivery of policies, approaches and technical messaging.
  • Motivate and inspire the conservation staff, build strong team spirit and culture. Ensure conservation staff are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills for the delivery of conservation strategies.
  • Act as the lead spokesperson of the organization on conservation issues to Hong Kong Government, media and the general public.
  • Keep abreast of emerging conservation issues. Raise decision-makers awareness and understanding of critical conservation issues.
  • Be the main “bridge” between WWF-Hong Kong and the rest of WWF Network in the area of Conservation. Liaise with WWF-China and other WWF offices to develop joint conservation projects in the region where appropriate.
  • Ensure alignment of WWF-HK’s conservation programmes to the WWF Global Programme Framework.
  • Enhance the value of Mai Po Nature Reserve as a key WWF-Hong Kong asset, utilize that asset to achieve both the conservation objectives related thereto and to ensure that the Ramsar site is a foremost Centre of Excellence in the region.
  • Provide support to the Director, Development to fundraise restricted income for conservation projects.
  • Prepare Annual Operating Plans (AOP) and budgets; monitor progress/results and analyze and correct any variances from the AOP/budgets.
  • Following established WWF guidelines, ensure that appropriate monitoring and evaluation systems are implemented.

What you need:

Required Skills and Competencies
  • Master degree in a relevant discipline, PhD in a biological-based science preferred.
  • Broad working experience and good knowledge of conservation and development issues in Hong Kong or/and Asia.
  • Minimum 15 years of professional experience in conservation, environment and development, or environmental campaigning, with some years at a senior executive grade desirable.
  • Proven track record in successfully developing, leading, and managing projects in the field of conservation, natural resource management, and/or other related fields.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English; Cantonese and Mandarin desirable.
  • Either good technical skills or high intellectual ability to understand technical issues, ability to develop and co-ordinate conservation programmes and projects, and to work effectively with a wise variety of partners and disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing and evaluating strategic plans, business plans and budgets.
  • Superior leadership and people management skills to build and lead a team of technical staff who are enthusiastic, goal oriented and with high critical thinking skills.
