CIMMYT Lead Scientist for Biotechnology


We are seeking an experienced scientist and research manager to lead the identification, use and stewardship of new cutting-edge biotechnologies, including transgenics, in CIMMYTs research portfolio. The successful candidate will lead and establish applied research projects for traits that meet high priority needs and have a high likelihood of acceptance and deployment in farmers’ fields in the developing world.

The successful candidate will work closely with maize and wheat breeders, legal and intellectual property specialists, the biosafety committee, personnel engaged in the management of laboratory, greenhouse and biosafety facilities, and external advisors to ensure rigid review, selection, introgression and evaluation of potential traits and adherence to international and institutional standards for research implementation and stewardship.

The position will be based at CIMMYT’s main campus (located 45 km northeast of Mexico City, Mexico), and includes global responsibilities with frequent interaction with colleagues in other countries requiring occasional international travel.
Key responsibilities of this position will be:
      Conceptualize and lead the development of projects that incorporate new trait biotechnologies including transgenic events into products that are in demand by CIMMYT’s target audience in the developing world, in particular resource poor farmers.
      Within CIMMYT’s transgenic research portfolio, ensure and oversee the implementation of state-of-the-art stewardship practices and adherence to laws and regulatory standards.
      Contribute to the development of IP agreements with technology providers and development partners.
      Ensure the development, staff education, and implementation of standard operating procedures to ensure world-class stewardship of biotechnology research activities and facilities.
      Interact with partners to enhance the effectiveness and stewardship of collaborative biotechnology research.
We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications:
      PhD in plant breeding, agricultural biotechnologies, or pertinent scientific field.
      Demonstrated biotechnology research and managerial leadership skills. ? Detailed knowledge of world-class standard operating procedures for responsible use of biosafety laboratory and glasshouse facilities.
      Demonstrated understanding of the legal and regulatory environment applicable to agricultural biotechnology research.
      Demonstrated experience communicating with diverse audiences about biotechnology uses and their responsible stewardship.
      Motivation to work in an international, multi-cultural environment that values partnerships.
      Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and competency in Spanish are required.
      Successful product concept through commercialization experience in a private sector biotechnology research program would be an advantage.
      Good level of attention to detail, client-orientation and personable, diplomatic and discrete approach to deal with people at all levels.
      Excellent organization skills and leadership.
      Ability to work with different nationalities, as a member of a diverse work team.
We will offer an initial contract for 3 years, which is renewable subject to continued need and funding for the position and performance of the staff member.
