The European Youth Forum (YFJ) is the Platform of Youth Organisations in Europe. Independent, democratic and youth-led, it represents more than 90 National Youth Councils and International Youth Organisations from across the Continent. The Youth Forum works to empower young people to participate actively in society to improve their own lives, by representing and advocating their needs and interests and those of their organisations towards the European Institutions, the Council of Europe and the United Nations.

The Forum is recruiting a Communications Coordinator. The successful candidate will work in the Secretary General’s Office and will report to the Secretary General.

TASKS

  • Design and implement strategic multimedia communication plans and support the advocacy of the European Youth Forum;
  • Manage and oversee the work of the Communications team within the European Youth Forum (2-4 people);
  • As their first contact point within the Youth Forum, establish and keep relations with the media, both in Brussels and at pan-European level;
  • Draft reactive and timely press releases, opinion articles or other media reactions;
  • Carry out periodical evaluation of media coverage and reach out;
  • In cooperation with the Policy and Advocacy Department, develop and implement communication strategies for specific processes, actions, events;
  • Help define strategies, messages and tools for communicating the work of the Youth Forum in accordance with the Work Plan and Strategic Priorities;
  • Coordinate the editorial production of European Youth Forum online and printed publications, with staff, volunteers and external consultants;
  • Support the organisation of public events (debates, briefings, seminars, conferences, etc..).

PROFILE OF THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Have at least 3-5 years of professional experience working at international level in developing strategic communication;
  • A university master degree in journalism, communication or political sciences is strongly desirable but can be compensated by extensive relevant NGO and/or non-formal education experience;
  • Thorough understanding of the workings of the EU institutions;
  • Have strategic thinking in designing multimedia communication actions;
  • Excellent writing skills and capacity to grasp complex information to convert it into simple and accessible language;
  • A self-motivated person, able to demonstrate initiative and to work with autonomy;
  • Excellent social media skills, in particular using Facebook and Twitter;
  • Ability to coordinate a team of people, including planning the team work and task division;
  • A team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills and experience with working in a multicultural environment;
  • Capacity to multi-task and co-ordinate several projects simultaneously, demonstrating excellent time management and organisational skills;
  • Advanced level in spoken and written English, knowledge of French is a strong asset, knowledge of other languages appreciated;
  • Computer literacy, with good working knowledge of word processing, e-mail and internet applications. Open Office knowledge is appreciated;
  • Ability to travel and to work flexible hours and on weekends, when required;
  • Ability to live in Brussels or the surrounding area.

TERMS OF THE CONTRACT

The duration of the contract is five years, with a trial period of six months. The contract is full time (35 hours per week) and the gross monthly salary (for a SP1 position according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement currently applied at the European Youth Forum) is 3008,25 Euro. A relocation package, hospitalisation insurance and other benefits are available. Travel expenses within the Brussels region are covered by the European Youth Forum.
