Materials Engineer/Scientist (Composites) at New West Technologies, LLC


New West Technologies, LLC (New West) is seeking a Materials Engineer/Scientist (Composites). This position supports the Department of Energy’s Wind and Water Power Technologies Office (WWTPO). The successful applicant will work closely with the WWTPO’s Technology Development team through the application of science and engineering principles to problems related to the understanding, characterization, and development of new technology necessary for the processing and manufacturing of different materials and products relevant to wind turbine systems.

Specifically, the candidate will lend his or her composite materials expertise in the analysis of projects related to wind turbine blade technologies (blade construction materials and coatings). Additionally, successful applicant may participate in out-year planning and analysis activities, helping to ensure the proper stewardship of tax payer funds. Applicant should be comfortable working independently, have the ability/drive to bring new project ideas to the client, as well as following client directions. Ability to communicate engineering terminology and concepts to non-technical supervisors is a must. Ability to conduct budget scenario planning is highly desired. Experience with Non-destructive testing/inspection/examination techniques (NDT/NDI/NDE) and relevant wind industry experience highly desired. Moderate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word highly desired. Familiarity with SharePoint interface/use desired.

Key Responsibilities:
• Assists in the evaluation of research activities funded by the Wind and Water Power Program and advises on future research priorities
• Prepares briefing materials, papers, reports and responses to inquiries for both internal and external distribution
• Keeps abreast of scientific advances in field of expertise and interacts with other experts in these fields
• Support other efforts, as requested by client, which may include drafting of technical documents, budget planning/scenarios exercises, workshop planning
• Makes presentations on technology and research objectives, content and progress of funded activities to a variety of professional audiences, including industry, manufacturing representatives, Federal employees, and trade association executives, participates in professional society meetings, and international standards committees
• Travel to workshops, research sites, industry meetings

Qualifications:
• Ability to write and produce publicly digestible, highly technical reports and presentations;
• Ability to work independently with management and technical staff members of government programs and national laboratories;
• Ability to meet high quality standards for services and products;

Additional skills, experience and knowledge desired for this position include:
• Knowledge of emerging renewable energy technology trends and impacts;
• Knowledge of and experience with cost of energy (COE) analysis;
• Consulting experience with private sector clients and/or government clients is preferred;
• Understanding of the wind turbine market and associated industries such as power transmission.

Required Technical Skills:
Strong working knowledge of MS Office Suite is required. Intermediate/Advanced MS Excel, PowerPoint, Word, SharePoint (Use only).
