Professor of Sustainable Development

This position is based in Washington, DC and will report to the Dean of the SIT Graduate Institute – DC Center.
General Description The Professor of Sustainable Development within the SIT Graduate Institute – DC Center will teach a minimum of four graduate courses annually; advise assigned number of students for the entire year including field-practicum; guide the completion and presentation of the final graduate degree program paper - capstone; and special assignment in collaboration with the Dean’s office to support program marketing, research and outreach to international development organizations. The faculty member will also participate in the further development of the part-time MA in Sustainable Development degree and other educational programs offered by the DC center in collaboration with the home campus in Vermont. Successful SIT faculty members are able to: develop and deliver experiential higher education pedagogy centered courses; support students integrate theory and practice, teach in the classroom; guide field practicum learning phase; and advise students individually and in small groups for assigned projects.
Specific Responsibilities Academic Program and Coursework
  • Coursework will require teaching “Theory and Practice in Sustainable Development” (3 Credits) and “Foundations: Intercultural Leadership and Management for Civil Society and Governance” (4 credits) for multiple student cohorts, and may include additional coursework upon request;
  • Organize and/or deliver workshops on specific topics (such as globalization, Inter-cultural communications and management, institutional capacity development);
  • Create a syllabus tailored to each course;
  • Design/Modify courses;
  • Grading student work and advising students;
  • Keep regular office hours;
  • Support student learning plan development for approximately 40-50 students;
  • Design and deliver elective courses specific to subject-matter expertise upon request;
  • Participate in all academic assessment activities and produce required documents; and
  • Support new degree program development.
Advising
  • Develop/oversee learning plans for the assigned advisees;
  • Advise approximately 15-20 students each academic year including monitoring advisees through practicum and act in advisory capacity to completion of Capstone, ensuring academic quality;
  • Support practicum placement activities as requested;
  • Grade practicum paper and presentation; and
  • Participate in capstone presentations and assessment.
Networking and Outreach
  • Attend conferences and events to represent and promote SIT DC, and stay abreast of development trends;
  • Support identifying and selecting guest speakers and support event hosting;
  • Create and maintain corporate partnerships for practicum; and
  • Travel to Vermont when requested for synergy and collaboration.
Academic Governance/Other
  • Participate/contribute to staff/faculty meetings;
  • Participate/represent SIT DC in governance meetings and committees as requested;
  • Perform research to stay abreast of current trends and as needed;
  • Administrative duties in support of position responsibilities; and
  • Other duties as requested.
Required Qualifications
  • Graduate degree from an accredited university plus a minimum of 10 years progressively responsible experience in the international development sector; or, PhD plus a minimum of 5 years progressively responsible experience in the international development sector;
  • Significant prior experience working in or with NGOs or experience in the international development sector;
  • Experience in or demonstrated potential to teach design and teach University level courses and advise in an institution committed to student-centered, experiential education;
  • Experience living or working in a developing country highly desirable;
  • Must have best practice and applied knowledge in the following technical areas: International Development: history, trends, current issues Global Business Management: change management, program management, global leadership, team-building, organizational behavior Experiential Learning
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and cultural sensitivity;
  • Ability to create a collaborative environment for students;
  • Ability to develop and teach courses to graduate students effectively while integrating experiential learning models;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, specifically MS Word, Powerpoint and Excel; and
  • Working knowledge of a second language desirable.
