Recycle More Program Educator (temporary, part-time)


Introduction

Seattle Tilth is an environmental education organization that seeks to inspire and educate people to safeguard our natural resources while building an equitable and sustainable local food system. This position is in support of King County Solid Waste Division's "Recycle More. It's Easy to Do" public outreach campaign (your.kingcounty.gov/solidwaste/garbage-recycling/recycle-more.asp).
The Recycle More Educator will be responsible for providing education and outreach on curbside recycling to diverse audiences and in a variety of settings. The Recycle More Educator will also assist with the logistics of the Recycle More program, including coordinating with volunteers, co-workers and partners, management of outreach materials and information tracking.
This position is expected to work 15-20 hours per week, and the work schedule will include weekends and occasional weekday evenings. The typical work days will be Fridays, Saturdays and/or Sundays, and the applicant must be available to work on these days. This is a temporary position beginning on May 3, 2013 and ending in late August through mid-September (end date can be flexible).
This position will work closely with the Resource Conservation Program Coordinator and Manager, as well as many volunteers. Applicants should have combined education and experience in resource conservation and educational program delivery. Knowledge of solid waste issues, with an emphasis on curbside recycling (including yard waste collection with food scraps and food-soiled paper) is strongly desired. Ability to communicate fluently in Spanish also strongly desired.
Compensation: $15 per hour.There are no benefits associated with this position.

Job Responsibilities

  • Set-up and staff outreach booths at community festivals, farmers markets, businesses and other venues throughout King County (outside of Seattle). The Educator will provide education to the public with the goal of increasing single-family, curbside recycling including primary recyclables (e.g. paper, cardboard, plastics, aluminum cans) and food scrap recycling.
  • Represent King County, effectively and professionally, at the above outreach events.
  • Assist with logistics coordination for outreach events, including maintaining, preparing and transporting supplies, and communicating with other outreach educators (such as co-workers and volunteers).
  • Coordinate with program partners, including community groups, businesses and government entities.
  • Track and report on program data, including outreach hours, contacts and booth visitor data.

Applicant Requirements

  • Credits towards an AA or Bachelor degree in natural resource management, environmental education, environmental science or related field, experience can substitute for education.
  • Ability to speak Spanish strongly desired.
  • At least 6 months experience teaching natural resource concepts and skills to adults and/ or children in a non-traditional setting.
  • Experience in teaching solid waste issues, with an emphasis on curbside recycling (including food waste) is preferred.
  • Strong computer, organizational and time management skills. Ability to use Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
  • MUST be able to work selected Fridays, Saturdays and/or Sundays from May 1 - August 31, 2013.
  • MUST have vehicle and be able to transport self and teaching materials to class locations throughout greater King County area. (Employee will be reimbursed for mileage-related expenses.)
  • Must be willing to work outside in all kinds of weather. Job requires regular lifting of up to 30 pounds and occasional heavy lifting up to 50 pounds
