Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking highly qualified applicants for the position of Senior Video Editor. This position reports to the Multimedia Director.
Responsibilities:
  1. Edit and produce multimedia content, including short news-style pieces and longer video features;
  2. Create visually compelling and journalistically excellent features that complement and enhance HRW’s research and advocacy;
  3. Work with the Multimedia Director and program staff to develop a coherent multimedia strategy; and
  4. Consult HRW’s Communications Director, the online team, and research and advocacy staff about multimedia projects.
Qualities:
Self-starter personality, ability to work in a fast-paced environment meeting tight deadlines, managing workflow and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
Managerial Responsibilities:
  1. Deliver outputs in a timely manner and be consistent with the agreed strategy and priorities of the Communications and Multimedia Departments;
  2. Establish clear work plans for staff and communicate priorities clearly and effectively. Provides oversight and take responsibility for delegated assignments;
  3. Ensure that the workload, reporting lines and well-being of the staff are looked after;
  4. Manage and guide staff by listening, having two-way communication, sharing pertinent information, responding appropriately and delegating appropriate responsibilities;
  5. Operate in compliance with organizational regulations and rules, including the policies of applicable employee agreements; and
  6. Provide appropriate and timely feedback on staff performance and provide guidance, coaching and training, as necessary.
Qualifications:
Education:  A degree in Communications, Filmmaking, or similar related field is required. An advanced degree is desirable.
Experience:  Minimum 7 years of experience in video editing is required.
Related Skills and Knowledge: 
  1. Proficient video editing on Final Cut Pro essential. Knowledge of Avid, Premiere a plus.
  2. Proficient use of Adobe Creative Suite.
  3. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required.  Script writing for video features required.
  4. Ability to work effectively with multiple languages is required.
  5. Flexibility in responding quickly to events as they occur, producing excellent multimedia material under tight deadlines is required.
