Field Support (Information Management) Intern at UNHCR

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is currently seeking one intern to work within the Field Information and Coordination Support Section (FICSS) at its Geneva headquarters. The Intern will gain practical experience in managing geographic information to support refugees globally and with produce maps and related products to support HQ staff.

About the Field Information and Coordination Support Section (FICSS)

UNHCR's Field Information and Coordination Support Section (FICSS) is kept busy all year providing support in the area of Information Management for HQ sections and our field operations around the world. This includes the identification and management of skilled staff to support our field operations to serve the populations that we serve.
While processes and procedures exist for the identification, management and deployment of staff exist in UNHCR, a system needs to be put in place to manage this information and track progress within the section that also links to training activities conducted by the section.

Supervision, duties and responsibilities

Under the guidance of the FICSS Senior Information Management Officer and in close cooperation with other in-house sections, the intern will undertake a variety of duties to help harmonize approaches to Information Management staff tracking and management. Duties could include, but not be limited to:
  • Desk review of current deployment systems, mechanisms for deployment of staff and current training activities.
  • Identification and creation of tools for managing staff and the production of guidance and procedures for use within FICSS.
  • Testing of staff management systems in office environment and definition of roles and responsibilities within the team.
  • Consolidation of existing staff management systems and population of improved tools.
  • Qualifications, skills and experience

  • Strong interest and/or exposure to the field of humanitarian response
  • Ability to conduct desk reviews and consolidate information
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment
  • Strong communication skills, writing and editing skills
  • Excellent research skills
  • Ability to handle several tasks simultaneously
  • Willingness to work with minimum supervision, independently, as well as to function as a member of a team
  • Experience in information and spreadsheet management
  • Demonstrated computer literacy, including strong command of MSOffice suite
  • Fluent English (both written and spoken) is essential
  • Fluency in a second UN official language (highly desirable)
  • Flexibility, adaptability and a positive attitude

    UNHCR internships are unpaid. The intern is responsible for his or her own travel, accommodation, medical insurance, visas, and living expenses.
