FACULTY POSITION IN STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING AT FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY (FIU) - MIAMI, FLORIDA

Florida International University is recognized as a Carnegie engaged university. Its colleges and schools offer more than 180 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs in fields such as engineering, international relations, architecture, law and medicine. As one of South Florida’s anchor institutions, FIU is worlds ahead in its local and global engagement, finding solutions to the most challenging problems of our time. FIU emphasizes research as a major component of its mission and enrolls 48,000 students in two campuses and three centers including FIU Downtown on Brickell and the Miami Beach Urban Studios. More than 160,000 alumni live and work in South Florida. FIU is a member of the Sun Belt Conference and has 400 student-athletes participating in 17 sports. In 2010 the Panthers won their first bowl game. For more information about FIU, visit http://www.fiu.edu.
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at FIU invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track position at all ranks in Structural Engineering with specialization in prestressed/post tensioned concrete bridges. Candidates are sought with expertise and a record of achievement in all areas, including but not limited to reinforced concrete, prestressed/post tensioned concrete bridges, building design, sustainability and analysis.  Evidence of research/scholarship is required. Industrial experience is a plus. The candidates must have a BS degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering area and an earned doctoral degree in Civil Engineering. Registration as a Professional Engineer in Florida (or the ability to obtain such licensure within four years of employment) is required. The successful candidate will be expected to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the traditional structural engineering curriculum, direct graduate students, and establish an externally funded research program in the areas of expertise.
The Bridge/Structural/Wind Engineering group in the department is carrying out significant research studies and the successful candidates will be required to collaborate with the group. A national center devoted to Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) (www.abc.fiu.edu) was recently established in the college of Engineering and Computing. Additionally, a group on climate and society provides an excellent opportunity to conduct research for mitigating the effect of sea level rise on coastal infrastructure. Since 2011, several new faculties with expertise in corrosion and non-destructive testing and world-renowned faculties in bridge and wind engineering have been added to the structural engineering group, providing an excellent opportunity for major collaborative work.
The department houses several state-of-the-art structural research facilities such as the Titan America Structures and Construction Testing Laboratory (TASCTL) (http://www.cee.fiu.edu/structures-and-construction-laboratory) which is one of the largest full-scale testing facilities in the State of Florida; the Mobile Structural Diagnostic Laboratory (MSDL) which is a self-contained mobile laboratory that specializes in Structural Health Monitoring and nondestructive testing (NDT) of various structures, including bridges, pavement, utility structures, traffic signals, and support foundations; and the  Wall of Wind (WOW) (http://www.cee.fiu.edu/wall-of-wind), a full-scale testing facility at FIU, which uses the latest technology in hurricane simulation and damage mitigation research. The new 12-fan WOW system is able to achieve the controllable, programmable, and repeatable testing in replication of hurricane winds up to Category 5 with wind speed exceeding 150 MPH.
The department is housed in a 250,000-sq.ft building on the 38-acre FIU Engineering Center. The department has 26 faculty members, a student body of over 950 with more than 170 in its graduate programs, and more than $5.0M in annual research awards. The department offers five degree programs: B.S. in Civil Engineering, B.S. in Environmental Engineering, M.S. in Civil Engineering, M.S. in Environmental Engineering, and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering.
Review of applications will commence on February 4, 2013 and will be accepted until the position is filled. The anticipated starting date is August 2013. Applications must be submitted on-line at careers.fiu.edu. (Job ID: #504986). Applications should include a signed cover letter, a complete resume including a list of publications, research and teaching experiences, a statement on research and teaching philosophy, and five references with complete contact information. Candidates should specify their main areas of expertise in the cover letter. For more information about the department, please visit http://www.cee.fiu.edu.
