Trade Policy Analyst WTO - World Trade Organisation Geneva, Switzerland


General Functions

Reporting to the Director of the Division and other senior staff as required, the incumbent is responsible for the following:
1. Under the supervision of more senior staff, assist in servicing the formal and informal meetings of the Committee on Agriculture (regular), including with respect to logistical arrangements, drafting of summary reports and Chairperson's notes, and preparing documents as may be requested by Members.
2. Under the supervision of more senior staff, receive, prepare and circulate all incoming agriculture notifications and provide information to delegates, colleagues, senior management and other intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) on substantive issues relating to the implementation of Members' commitments under the Agreement on Agriculture, as well as their compliance with the notification procedures in the area of agriculture.
3. Deliver technical assistance and training related to the Agreement on Agriculture and actively participate in the day-to-day counselling of Geneva-based delegates on agriculture notifications. Contribute to the development of training material and other information products (e.g. notifications handbook, Members' Transparency Toolkit on the WTO's agriculture web page, etc.).
4. Participate in and provide support to the Division's outreach activities, and maintain contacts with other international organizations, particularly those IGOs with observer status in the Committee, such as Food and Agriculture Organization, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, OECD, International Grains Council, UNCTAD, World Food Programme.
5. Develop expertise and conduct research and analysis on trade policy issues or technical subject matters relating to the work of the Division, such as evolution of commodity trade, price volatility, food security, international food aid.
6. Participate in and contribute to other activities as may be assigned by the Director of the Division, notably by responding to ad hoc requests for information from both within and outside the WTO, providing support to the DDA negotiations, the Committee on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures, and WTO dispute settlement panels.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

An advanced university degree or equivalent in international trade, economics, law or another relevant field is required.

Knowledge and skills:

The incumbent should have a basic knowledge of the Agreement on Agriculture and WTO system; good technical and analytical skills, particularly data processing skills; high level of drafting skills (e.g. correspondence/reports, records of meetings, background papers, statistical notes, etc.); sound knowledge of trade-related policy issues in the area of agriculture and commodity trade; good presentation skills; and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, and similar software.
The following interpersonal capabilities are required: to relate to and build relationships with colleagues; to understand clear factual information and effectively communicate it to knowledgeable specialised audiences; and to work as a member of a team, relating to others in a multicultural environment, and capacity to work autonomously to achieve his/her objectives.

Work Experience:

Minimum two years' relevant professional experience is required.

Languages:

Excellent knowledge of English is required, including the ability to write clearly and concisely. A good knowledge of French or Spanish would be an advantage.
