DOCTOR OB/GYN, MIDWIFE & NURSE IN LABOR DELIVERY DELEGATES

The Canadian Red Cross Society (CRCS) is a non-profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping Canadians, as well as the most vulnerable throughout the world.
CRCS is currently seeking experienced Doctors in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Midwives and Nurses in Labor Delivery to be part of the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) roster of the Canadian Red Cross. ERU Delegates are trained and ready to be deployed for 4 to 6 weeks on short notice in the event of an overseas emergency.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
  1. To plan and support maternal-child health care (MCH) activities together with the host National Society and / or local health authorities. This may include:
  • Ante-natal care (incl. uncomplicated pregnancy)
  • Labour and delivery (incl. uncomplicated pregnancy)
  • Post-natal care
  • Support to Safe Motherhood and breastfeeding initiatives
  • Immunisation of mother and child
  • Paediatric care
  • Family planning
  • Nutritional surveillance
  1. To work with and / or train traditional birth attendants (TBA) and community health workers (CHW) according to public health principles and local health standards.
  2. To manage the obstetrics ward and delivery room
  3. To coordinate referrals from the out-patient department or other clinics
  4. To cover all emergency obstetric cases (incl. assistance with caesarean sections as needed and/or facilitating referral and transport to a specialized care facility).
  5. To work with and/or train local midwives/nurses according to public health principles and local health standards.
  6. To provide regular and timely reports, inclusive of health statistics according to health monitoring system.
  7. To support the capacity of the host National Society and develop clinical skills where possible.
Essential Requirements
• Certified in Canada as midwife, nurse or MD with over five years experience in labour and delivery.
• Experience of managing & supporting staff.
• Experience in living or working in a cultural context other than their own.
• Comfortable managing maternal health and peri-natal care in a low-resource environment.
• Able to work independently and consult MD/refer patients as needed.
• Comfortable with carrying out pre- and post-natal consultations.
• Capable of decision-making in conditions of uncertainty.
• Able to work with limited resources.
• Be innovative and at ease in problem solving.
• Capable of handling extreme stress, change and situations of insecurity.
• Able to leave for four to six weeks on very short notice.
• Competent in computer use (Windows, Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, word-processing, e-mail).
• Valid international driving license (manual gears).
• Fluent in English.
Desirable Requirements
• Experience in working in low-resource settings.
• Fluent in a language other than English, French or Spanish.
• Experience in working for the Red Cross/Red Crescent movement.
