EMERGENCY RESPONSE UNIT (ERU) MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST DELEGATE

The Canadian Red Cross Society (CRCS) is a non-profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping Canadians, as well as the most vulnerable throughout the world.
CRCS is currently seeking an experienced Medical Laboratory Technologist to be part of the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) roster of the Canadian Red Cross. ERU Delegates are trained and ready to be deployed for 4 to 6 weeks on short notice in the event of an overseas emergency. Key Tasks and Responsibilities 1. Support the medical and surgical health activities of the hospital together with the host National Society and / or local health authorities. 2. Plan and set-up the medical laboratory for the hospital according to required health standards. This includes: • Maintenance of stock control system for reagents, equipment and other items • Monitor quality control and ensure accurate record keeping • Maintenance of laboratory hygiene and safety and adherence to universal precautions • Training and supervision of local staff 3. Liaise as directed with other local and international health providers. 4. Provide regular and timely reports to the ERU team leader, inclusive of health statistics – especially notifiable test results and rates using the health monitoring system. 5. Work according to the Ministry of Health / WHO guidelines and Sphere standards. 6. Support the capacity of the host National Society and develop skills where possible.
Essential Requirements • Professional qualification as a Medical Laboratory Technologist. • Experience of managing & supporting staff. • Experience in living or working in a cultural context other than their own. • Competent in computer use (Windows, Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, word-processing, e-mail). • Valid international driving license (manual gears). • Fluent in English.
Desirable Requirements • Further qualification in tropical medicine diagnostics. • 2 years experience of working for a humanitarian aid organisation in a developing country. • Experience of planning and managing budgets. • Experience of writing narrative & financial reports. • Experience in working for the Red Cross/Red Crescent movement. • Experience in working in low-resource settings. • Fluent in a language other than English. .
