ODIHR Arabic Translator
Recruitment for a roster of Arabic Translators.
The Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) is OSCE’s principal institution responsible for the human dimension. ODIHR is active throughout the OSCE area in the fields of election observation, democratic development, human rights, tolerance and non-discrimination, and the rule of law. ODIHR’s assistance projects and other activities are implemented in participating States in accordance with ODIHR’s mandate. Many of ODIHR’s assistance projects contribute to supporting OSCE Mediterranean partner for co-operation countries. This often requires Arabic language skills.
Therefore the Office requires the services of an Arabic translator on an occasional basis with experience of translating documents in the areas of election observation, democratic development, human rights, tolerance and non-discrimination, and rule of law, including translation of legislation, other legal as well as official documents. The Translator can be based anywhere in the world but will need to be available for telephone or e-mail contact on short notice and should render the services in his/her capacity as an individual translator, not as an agency.
Tasks and Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the Programme Manager, the consultant will be tasked with translating and/or proof-reading (editing) ODIHR publications, reports and other written documents, including legislation, legal and official documents from English into Arabic and vice versa. The consultant should be an Arabic native speaker and should possess excellent command of English.
Necessary Qualifications
University degree in translation (languages), humanities social sciences or related field; Arabic as the principle language of education or demonstrated professional knowledge or translation skills in this language; Minimum of three years of experience in translation; including editing; Excellent knowledge of English, including excellent English language drafting skills; Familiarity with the thematic areas of ODIHR activities in the field of democratization issues, election, gender equality, human rights, Roma and Sinti issues, tolerance and non-discrimination issues; Previous work experience as a translator for international organizations or NGOs an asset; Familiarity with OSCE commitments and international standards is an asset; Ability to work independently under pressure and with limited time frames; Access to Internet and e-mail communication facilities.
Remuneration Package
Remuneration will depend on the selected consultant’s qualifications and experience and be in accordance with OSCE established rates. Coverage of travel expenses and a standard per diem will be provided by the OSCE/ODIHR, when applicable, in accordance with OSCE travel policies.
