One Planet is a new and ambitious landmark series for BBC1 - a re-imagining of the ‘Planet’ brand that brought you Blue Planet, Planet Earth and Frozen Planet. Just as Planet Earth did, One Planet will give a generation a chance to take a global view of our planet, but this time in an immersive and interactive way.

One Planet …where winning is everything…
6 x 60’ for 2016 on BBC1
Our planet is experienced as dynamic arenas where animals and plants play out the game of life for the ultimate prize: a stake in the next generation.

One Planet will:-

1) transform our familiar landscapes into dynamic arenas using a range of new immersive filming techniques – our planet as you’ve never experienced it before.

2) reveal the winners in the game of life as the animals and plants that use any variation in the way they look, behave or interact socially to give them the edge…This is life as you’ve never understood it before.

3) tell a story of winning that we can all relate to because every living thing, ourselves included, is descended from a proven winner. We are all part of the story of evolution – the greatest story in nature.

4) be the first truly 360 degree landmark with end-to-end integration of digital, social media and TV.

So, if Planet Earth showed us the wonder and awe of our home.
Life revealed the endless variety of animals we share it with.
One Planet will give us front row seats at the game of life…

We are interested in the potential of a Series Director that could help develop the look and feel of the series in conjunction with the Producers and APs but may not necessarily take on all the SP roles stated below. A proven track record in directing with a strong visual flair and innovation in filming techniques would be essential. You would be expected to produce at least 1 episode of the series.

1) Inspire and innovate with story-telling–you will need to work closely with the EP to bring fresh ideas and an innovative approach to the series. This will involve embracing the challenge to popularize evolution in a way that retains scientific validity, appeals to the target audience, fulfills all the stakeholders’ needs, and stays within editorial guidelines of the BBC. You will need a proven track record in creative film-making including excellent story-telling, technical innovation, and good writing skills. Experience of leading teams through edits to ensure a consistently high level of story-telling across a series is preferred. Experience of producing long-form, ideally some kind of science-based, landmark TV is also preferred whilst experience of behavior-led natural history would be extremely useful but not essential.

2) Build and lead a team–you will need to demonstrate an understanding of the key skills that are required to deliver all the hallmarks of landmark but to have ideas of how to inject new skills that could refresh the approach. This will require an innovative approach to staffing. You will be responsible for the day-to day editorial and financial management of the team that you help to build. You will work closely with the production manager and EP on the overall delivery of the vision of the series on time and on budget. You will be responsible for health and safety on the series. You will also be expected to create a collaborative environment in which new landmark talent can be cultivated for the future.

3) Inspire and manage technological innovation – it is vital that you have an appreciation of the importance of technological innovation both in the way that we shoot and also post-produce landmark wildlife TV. You will need to demonstrate that you understand these new technologies and how they can be applied to improve story-telling for our audiences as well as how they impact budgets and work-flows. You will be expected to work with the PM and other key Producers to manage this technology and how it is allocated most effectively across the series for maximum impact on screen.

4) Manage a variety of complex relationships – you will need to work with the EP to help manage a whole range of existing relationships eg with the commissioner, controller of BBC1, Discovery Channel and other European co-producers. In addition, you should demonstrate an entrepreneurial attitude as well as a sophisticated level of negotiation skills in order to forge new partnerships that could open up new technologies, access, logistic support etc for the series.

5) Find new ways to connect with our audience – you will need to be excited by the rapid evolution in digital technology and willing to embrace new ways of interacting with our audiences. You will need to ensure that the team embraces this approach whilst ensuring that it does not impact on the delivery of the TV series.

Applicants for the Series Director role should focus their 200 word response around innovation. We will be looking for fresh new ways to shoot landscapes that give the audience an immersive experience as well as new story-telling techniques that capture the ‘game of life’ approach of the series. A showreel demonstrating innovation is required.
