Rio Tinto Technology and Innovation (T&I) provides a range of support and services functions to Rio Tinto and its operational Business Units. The Project Development and Implementation (PDI) group within T&I provide project management support and expertise to Rio Tinto Product Groups as well as directly executing a range of major projects in a highly effective and repeatable method.
 
An outstanding opportunity exists for an ambitious geotechnical engineer to join the ERA Project.  You will get involved in the early construction stages as part of an owners' team on an Exploration Box-cut and Decline project at the Energy Resources Australia (ERA) Ranger Uranium Mine in the Northern Territory.
 
Reporting to the Area Manager, you will be responsible for developing and providing all geotechnical parameters to support the execution of the decline mining development, including the monitoring of major excavation performance and the implementation of ground support and quality management systems.
 
Key Accountabilities include:
  • Developing the ground support management plan and review systems
  • Developing and re-assessing the ground support plan for the development phase of the underground construction.
  • Meeting all safety requirements.
  • Implementing and monitoring major openings.
  • Overseeing ground support and the collection of geotechnical and hydrological data.
  • Managing development performance indicators that monitor construction progress variations from budget.
  • Providing input into the preparation of cost and performance budgets.
  • Participating in instrumentation design and planning for excavation monitoring.
  • Undertaking and implementing project and study tasks as required (eg. Continuous improvement of the fibrecrete program; assessment of extraction level ground support and development systems, input into long-term geotechnical planning of major excavations eg. crushers)
To be successful in this role you will have geotechnical engineering experience including exposure to an underground mining role, tertiary geotechnical engineering qualification/s and a sound knowledge of Vulcan, Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word.
