ICAP Technical Writer


POSITION SUMMARY:
Grant Funded.
ICAP at Columbia University (CU) seeks a Technical Writer on a temporary consultancy basis who will be charged with developing and/or editing content for proposals, reports, and other technical documents. The Technical Writer will be responsible for ensuring the highest quality of writing for all relevant content, including that originally prepared by other staff and/or technical experts. Working collaboratively with field-based and headquarters staff, the Technical Writer will work throughout the development process to conceptualize, draft outlines, conduct research, and produce compelling content, ensuring overall quality and consistency. He or she must be able to produce content quickly and juggle several writing/editing projects at once.
The Technical Writer should be familiar with the process of responding to solicitations by U.S. government entities, such as the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In addition, he or she should possess exceptional writing and editing skills, as well as global public health expertise.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead the technical writing for proposals in a range of public health areas, including HIV/AIDS, health systems strengthening, TB, malaria, and maternal and child health.
  • Work collaboratively with field-based and headquarters staff, providing leadership to conceptualize and write and/or compile proposal sections, including technical and management approaches, work plans, monitoring and evaluation plans, corporate capabilities statements, etc.
  • Participate in proposal-related meetings.
  • Conduct in-country information gathering trips, as needed.
  • Support the writing for other programmatic reports and technical documents.
  • Participate in final reviewing and editing of both proposals and other documents to ensure consistency of writing style and format, as well as adherence to ICAP and funder standards.
  • Support the capacity building of headquarters and field staff in best practices for proposal development.
EDUCATION:
  • Advanced degree in public health or related field.
EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • At least 10 years of writing and editing experience, and at least 5 years of experience working in the global public health field.
  • In-depth knowledge of public health-related topics.
  • Ability to juggle multiple demands, manage shifting priorities, and negotiate timelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently in teams under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent inter-personal ability.
