Program Summary:
In Jonglei State, International Medical Corps provides primary health care and emergency services at the Akobo County Hospital with support from ECHO, CHF, BPRM, MoH/WB/IMA; and at the Pochalla Primary Health Care Center (PHCC) with support from BPRM, the Hickey Foundation, Jersey Overseas Aid Commission and the MoH/WB/IMA.
Jonglei State in South Sudan has been affected by inter-communal fighting, particularly between the Nuer and Murle ethnic groups, in recent years. Approximately 120,000 people (UNMISS and OCHA updates on January 22nd 2012) were displaced during the 2011-12 fighting, with severe disruption of access to basic services (health, nutrition, shelter, WASH and education) in the affected counties. Fighting in August 2011 resulted in 700 deaths across the state.
International Medical Corps will provide surge capacity by deploying additional human resources to reinforce health services at the Akobo Hospital and Pochalla PHCC, to ensure consistent access to quality emergency health care for people affected by communal violence.
JOB SUMMARY The Operating Room Nurse (theater assistant) will be based in Pochalla, Jonglei State and will be mainly responsible to provide assistance to the surgical team in Pochalla PHCC.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/SCOPE OF WORK: (Essential functions, quality/quantity expected list of marginal duties and number of national/and or expat staff supervised)
• Follow international standards for operative care in a field hospital environment • Assist surgeons in forming and adjusting surgical schedule • maintain a sterile environment for the patient and surgical team before, during and after surgery • Prepare the operating room and ensure all surgical instruments are washed and sterilized. Prepare the patient for surgery •Assist the surgeon during the operation by passing surgical instruments to the surgeon, cutting sutures, applying dressings and preparing specimens for laboratoray analysis. •Transport the patient to the recovery area and clear the operating room for next procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS • Training related to basic and specialty instrumentation, principles of sterilization and aseptic technique. • Minimum of 3 years of experience required, of which 1 year should be of developing country experience or resource deprived environment (general hospital/county facility) • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written English • Previous charge nurse experience • Extremely flexible, and have the ability to cope with stressful situations • Ability to relate to and motivate local staff effectively • Innovative and adaptable to the limitations of a field hospital Preferable • BS in related course • Fluency in additional languages
