PUBLIC HEALTH SPECIALIST


Docters of the World is the Dutch branch of the international medical non-governmental organisation Médecins du Monde (MdM). We rely on the commitment of volunteer health professionals to provide medical assistance to vulnerable populations worldwide. In addition to medical care, we improve access to healthcare, and bear witness to human rights abuses, giving a voice to people who would otherwise not be heard.
Since cyclone Nargis in 2008, MdM has carried out relief efforts in the township of Pyapon, Ayeyarwady Delta, and transitioned this into a long-term project to improve primary health care, under funding through PONREPP, then EU/NSA, then JIMNCH and now the 3MDG Fund. The project will be funded by the 3MDG Fund until 2016. The project implementation will come under the branch of MdM France starting on 1 July 2013. We seek a professional to support the MdM teams temporarily with the development and implementation of health plans.

PUBLIC HEALTH SPECIALIST (MNCH specialist)

Responsibilities
  • To formulate a six-month planning for the existing maternal, newborn and child health project in Pyapon, according to the format required by UNOPS and the 3MDG Fund. Detailed planning and budgeting are required. This process will be completed in Myanmar, with support from the MdM-NL and MdM-France teams in Myanmar and the program manager in Amsterdam.
  • To ensure that the Township Health Department of Pyapon is involved in the planning process and feels ownership of the project.
  • To report to the General Coordinator MdM-NL in Myanmar.
Qualifications
  • University degree in related study (public health, reproductive/mother and child health)
  • Experience in undertaking needs assessments and conducting workshops for surfacing needs and for developing strategy, being an excellent communicator
  • Experience working for an INGO in a developing country and with developing health project proposals and strategy for donor applications
  • Experience in and knowledge of reproductive/mother and child care, comprehensive health concept
  • Experience in guiding community development process in low resource settings
  • Strong skills in working with local health authorities
  • Experience with handover of a large project between INGOs is preferred
  • Familiarity with the situation in Myanmar and interest in health systems and health care development
  • Excellent command of the English language (written and verbally)
  • Flexible, enthusiastic and pro-active attitude
We offer
It concerns a challenging position in a challenging international setting, based in Pyapon. In accordance with the organization’s salary scale and depending on your background, we offer a gross monthly salary of 2,000 Euro excl. 8% holiday payment based on fulltime employment. In addition, MdM covers travel, insurance and a per diem for expenses in the field. Basic accommodation will be provided in the MdM apartment in Pyapon, shared with the general coordinator.
