BackgroundThe mission of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) www.iavi.org  is to ensure the development of safe, effective, accessible preventive HIV vaccines for use throughout the world. IAVI works with a variety of partners to reach this goal, through research and development (R&D), education and policy efforts. We engage with governments, international agencies, the private sector, community based organizations and others to promote appropriate public policies.

Position Summary:
Job purpose The postholder will take the lead on driving forward a new Leadership Giving Strategy which includes accessing HNWI, Foundation and Corporate funding streams, and working with partners locally, initially in India and California to build up ‘local’ income sources. The post holder will develop and manage a new team in the US focused on private sector fundraising, and will have a strong matrix relationship with the Fundraising Director in Europe, and with the Fundraising Manager in India.
 Working closely with the Vice President - External Relations  (VP:ER), the postholder will have responsibility for bringing in a total of US $10 million annually by 2018 in new funding from ultra HNWI, Foundations and Corporates.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic planning and work planning 
• Working with the VP: ER to provide active and effective leadership to the private sector fundraising team in the United States (direct line management.)
• Provide strong contributions to External Relations strategic review, strategic planning, and work planning.
• Lead on the delivery of a new Leadership Giving Strategy.
• Lead the Private Sector Team in the US in delivering on effective strategic and operational plans and in reaching agreed fundraising targets.
• Play an active role on the External Relations Management Team, supporting the VP: ER in providing direction and oversight to the department.
• Represent IAVI at key conferences, meetings and events as required.
Developing new income streams for IAVI• Working closely with the VP: ER drive forward the implementation of the new IAVI Resource Mobilisation (RM) Strategy to access new funding from Ultra High Net Worth Individuals (UHNWI) (Leadership giving program) and Foundations, and from local fundraising sources close to IAVI’s R & D presence (initially in La Jolla and in India ).
• Develop detailed plans with benchmarks, targets, and financial modeling for each new income stream.
• Identify the highest-potential prospects and develop & implement cultivation strategies to turn prospects into IAVI supporters.
• Oversee the recruitment and on boarding of key new staff to deliver the new Strategy
• Develop and manage an integrated program of proposition/ case development, research, donor cultivation, acquisition and retention.
• Develop strong and effective relationships with R & D and with key partners, and take forward joint fundraising efforts as appropriate.
• Work closely with the Country Director India Office and staff to implement a fundraising program in India.
• Develop and manage the expenditure budget to ensure that income is generated cost effectively and to ensure that funds are used effectively.
• Assist other staff, in the evaluation, researching, cultivation and solicitation of the highest-potential  major donor prospects.
Donor Stewardship and Reporting• Ensure strong donor stewardship of Private Sector Donors.
• Ensure appropriate and timely follow-up of donors following the receipt of financial commitments (gift acknowledgement coordinating "thank-you's", ensuring the implementation of donor recognition activities, etc);
• Mentor staff to build rapport and good relationships with donors -   and to follow best practice in donor stewardship.
• Ensure that the contacts management system is used to effectively monitor and track relationships with key donors.
•  Ensure all required reports to donors are produced to deadline and to a high standard.
Inter-Departmental Co-ordination• Develop close working relations RM functions in Europe, the US and India and ensure a collaborative and cohesive approach to strategy, planning and implementation.
• Develop strong relationship with R & D and with Finance and Administration and ensure a smooth flow of information.
Other Management Responsibilities• Deputize for the VP : ER as required.
• Ensure effective management and oversight of the Leadership Giving /HQ budget.
• Work closely with FA to forecast and project income , keep income information up to date, and provide  management information as required

Person Specification 
The successful candidate will be an accomplished development professional with a track record of achieving fundraising goals and targets from philanthropic sources. The candidate will have proven experience of managing teams delivering income from Foundations, HNWI, and Corporates and a strong understanding of fundraising techniques from philanthropic funding streams. S/he will have the knowledge of fundraising tactics and strategies and direct experience executing within a global organization, preferably with the complexity of a multi-site and/or multi-functional structure. The candidate will have a history of working effectively with senior leadership and Board members when required.
Working knowledge of HIV/AIDS or vaccines is a plus, but not required. However, the candidate must have a passion for the mission of IAVI and be comfortable selling the science which is at the core of its work.

Essential • Minimum undergraduate university degree
• Minimum 10 years experience in fundraising, including minimum seven years experience of major gift fundraising, preferably with an international NPO
• Experience of developing and/or implementing a major gift strategy of at least
US$10 million annually, with evidence of results
• Excellent and proven knowledge of major gift fundraising methodology including prospect research, proposal preparation and the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major donors.
Other core competencies required:• Implementing Strategy: The ability to design a comprehensive implementation plan to approach particular new growth opportunities with HNWI and in new markets such as India. Have proven experience of leading teams bringing in and maintaining income from philanthropy streams and   in particular from UHNW.
• Executing Results: Demonstrated experience driving results to include prioritization of goals, setting and reaching of attainable targets, and establishment of metrics with accountability.
• Building Relationships & Using Influence: Proven results in building relationships both internally and externally. Strong networks and evidence of using them to leverage funding.
• Managing Teams: Experience in organizational management and experience managing both up and down. Must be comfortable within a matrix environment and be able to recruit and lead a high-performing team of professionals.
• Interpersonal Acumen: Intellectual rigor and curiosity, communications savvy and a personal presence that conveys confidence.  Able to build strong relationships founded on mutual trust and transparency.
