Research Fellows – Gender & Development

We are seeking to recruit up to two fellows with international reputations for innovative work in the areas of gender and development and sexuality and development. One appointee will be a senior fellow who will consolidate and innovate the Institute's programme of research and advisory work on gender and development. The other appointee will lead a 2-3 year programme of work onSexuality, Law and Poverty. The sexuality work is largely, but not wholly, embedded within theParticipation, Power and Social Change research team while the gender work is spread across all Institute research teams.
 The successful candidate will raise funds for, and undertake research; contribute to IDS' postgraduate teaching; work with our academic colleagues in the University of Sussex in relation to our shared teaching and research interests and liaise closely with the Bridge gender advocacy and mainstreaming programme. The successful candidate will have a strong track record of fund raising and policy engagement.

Requirements:

  • Applicants should have an international reputation as a researcher in both sexuality and development and gender. 
  • Applicants with a disciplinary background in anthropology, economics, feminist economics, political science, sociology or a related discipline are encouraged. 
  • Leadership skills, an excellent publications record and experience and interest in bridging research with practice and policy are essential.
  • Candidates should be fluent in written and spoken English and should normally have a PhD (although exceptionally, comparable research and practical experience may be taken as a substitute). 
  • A demonstrated capacity to work in multidisciplinary teams and with partners from a wide range of countries will also be valued, as will language abilities beyond English. Applications from those with a strong background in postgraduate teaching and convening will be particularly welcome.
Salary: £41,785 - £60k in the IDS grade 8-9, subject to experience
