PATH's Vaccine Access and Delivery (VAD) Global Program supports the integration of vaccines for public health impact and disease control in developing countries by focusing on activities that facilitate vaccine introduction and widespread use, such as determining disease burden, conducting clinical trials, establishing the health economics of vaccine use, raising awareness of disease burden and the impact of vaccination, increasing the availability of technologies through licensing and commercialization, and advocating for appropriate policies. In addition, the program implements activities that improve the accessibility of high-quality immunization services including training, supervision, health information systems, immunization safety, logistics and communication.

As part of the VAD global program, the Vaccine Implementation Technical Assistance Consortium (VITAC) project is currently recruiting a Communications Officer to support the work of the Advocacy and Communications team.

The Vaccine Implementation Technical Assistance Consortium (VITAC) seeks to accelerate the introduction and sustained use of vaccines by a number of means including through: assisting countries in low-resource settings in accessing the technical evidence, tools and skills needed for informed decision-making in relation to new vaccine introductions and the optimal implementation of vaccines; conducting research studies to help ensure the optimal use of safe and effective vaccines to meet country needs; assisting country immunization stakeholders to appreciate the value and cost-effectiveness of vaccines and to advocate for their use; helping build political will at global and country levels to facilitate vaccine introduction and support the financially sustainable use of vaccines; and in establishing a platform for countries in low-resource settings to access the technical and other resources needed for sustained and optimal use of vaccines.

VITAC’s Advocacy and Communications team supports the GAVI Alliance in ensuring robust evidence-based and scientific communications underpins GAVI’s country and donor facing advocacy and communications activity. Specific responsibilities include:

Globally focused:

  • Contribute to the development of communication strategies and tools to support the GAVI Alliance's work in raising its profile and supporting the achievement of its fundraising objectives.
  • Support the generation of communication and background materials to support global advocacy goals using a variety of channels appropriate to reach target audiences.
  • Support the development of global alliances or coalitions to achieve advocacy goals.
  • Support GAVI and VITAC partners in the management and planning for high-profile advocacy-focused events as appropriate.

Country focused:

  • Support partner efforts to develop a GAVI equity framework and a series of communication tools developed from the agreed framework.
  • Work as a member of a team to develop background briefings, research summaries, tools and messages to support in-country advocacy and communication goals.
  • Work closely with colleagues within partner organizations on collaborative efforts to promote the importance of immunization and equity.
  • Working closely with PATH and Johns Hopkins advocacy and communications teams develop and deliver a plan to ensure consistent online and social media presence for country stakeholders.
Required Skills

  • Proven effectiveness at global health communications and/or event management, including the ability to communicate complex scientific and economic information to diverse stakeholders and audiences in the appropriate format.
  • Knowledge of global health and development issues
  • Strong editing skills for a variety of media
  • A team player who enjoys working in a diverse environment with the ability to establish harmonious and effective working relationships over geographical distance
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and understand the needs of global donors, decision-makers, and influencers to achieve results
  • Demonstrated experience successfully working in a client-oriented environment, as well as with a variety of partners and stakeholders to achieve objectives
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment requiring responses to ad hoc opportunities in addition to planned work deliverables.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English; French language skills desirable; diplomacy in communicating with a broad and diverse audience
  • Knowledge and experience in the area of vaccines or other health fields highly desirable. 
  • Ability to travel up to 25 percent time annually
Required Experience

Postgraduate degree in journalism, public policy, international relations,  communications or international development. Minimum of three years' progressive experience in international advocacy and communications or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
