Senior Energy Advisor


The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) is the government department responsible for promoting British interests overseas and supporting British citizens and business around the globe.
The Climate Change and Energy Department (CCED) in the FCO leads HMG’s international engagement to deliver secure, reliable and affordable energy supplies to the UK, and globally, as part of the secure transition to a low carbon economy. We aim to do this through: open, stable energy markets governed by international rules and norms; increased trade and investment in energy and low-carbon contributing to UK growth and export targets; and an effective global response to climate change. Energy security plays an increasingly important role in foreign policy and the department directs and coordinates the work of the FCO’s posts overseas in support of this objective. The department works closely with the Department for Energy & Climate Change (DECC) and other Whitehall departments, including UK Trade & Investment, as well as UK industry.
Your role will be to advise CCED and its overseas network of posts on key emerging trends in the global energy picture and how they impact the UK’s international energy security objectives.You will do this by drawing on detailed knowledge of the international energy industry (mainly traditional oil and gas, but also renewables).
You will offer technical expertise in assessment of UK policy choices, particularly in the context of the UK’s energy diplomacy and supporting FCO posts overseas in pursuit of FCO and UK commercial objectives.  This role will also require you to help build the knowledge and expertise of the energy sector among FCO staff and expand FCO’s network of contacts across the energy community (industry, academia etc).
Applicants must hold a relevant degree and have senior management experience in the energy industry, including international exposure. You must also be a British Citizen and be able to commit to significant international travel.
