Chatham House is looking for an extremely organised and self-motivated individual to join the International Security Department to support the Research Director in the smooth running of all aspects of the Department’s activities.

The Programme Manager is a key role within the Department and is at the centre of a diverse range of activities. The Manager assists the Director in the overall management of the Department and for the coordination of all project related activities, and is responsible for the smooth running of the Department in the Director's absence. He/she is responsible for administering the financial and contractual arrangements at Department and project level. He/she is expected to input in to the research outreach strategy of the Department. The Programme Manager is responsible for the Programme Coordinators.
The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, organized and able to manage a team. They will have some or all the following skills / capabilities: 
  • Proven interest in international security and defence 
  • Minimum Master’s degree in politics, international relations or related discipline
  • 3 years of project management experience
  • Experience of working with diverse stakeholders and liaising with funders
  • Experience organizing and running events
  • Confident writing and speaking skills and experience communicating to a variety of audiences
  • Experience managing budgets
  • Excellent time management skills required
  • Understanding of international policy communities
  • Knowledge of a foreign language is an asset

Chatham House is looking for a Research Assistant to provide support to senior staff to the Asia Programme, and to support a project on Afghanistan. Over an 18-month period the project will engage with Afghan, regional and western policy makers to explore issues and propose options relating to reconciliation, elections, development, relations with Afghanistan's immediate neighbourhood and their implications for western governments and stakeholders.
The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, organized and keen to form an integral part of a team. They will have some or all the following skills / capabilities: 
  • Proven interest in Afghanistan and regional politics
  • Minimum Master’s degree in politics, international relations or related discipline
  • 2 years of project management experience
  • Experience of working with diverse stakeholders and liaising with funders

Chatham House is looking for an experienced researcher who is a proven project manager to lead our research stream on Indicators of Progress for illegal logging. This project aims to measure the difference that the global effort to combat illegal logging and associated trade has made using a comprehensive set of standardized indicators.

This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to lead an innovative and influential project and to make a valuable contribution to policy debates in the field, while forming part of a dynamic team working across energy, environment and resource issues.  
The candidate will have most or all of the following skills/capabilities:
  • Proven expertise in the forestry sector of at least 8 years, with particular experience of analysing timber trade and illegal logging
  • Proven experience handling and analysing complex data sets
  • Proven research skills, and the ability to write clearly and effectively to communicate complex research findings
  • The ability to project manage and work independently
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people.

The DeAnne Julius Fellowship offers early-career economic researchers with an interest in policy-oriented research the opportunity to work for one year with the Chatham House International Economics team. The Julius Fellowship honours the institute's former chairman, Dame DeAnne Julius. 
Applications are invited from researchers who have recently completed their PhD in international economics, international political economy or related subjects (or who have equivalent research experience).

How to apply:

Candidates must submit the following:

  • Fellowship research project proposal (maximum 1,000 words) 
  • Two writing samples in English, including preferably one published sample
The research proposal should outline the topic to be investigated and, the likely methodology, and must explain the project’s importance and policy relevance. It should also describe any necessary fieldwork and provide a timeline of activities, to indicate how the proposed work would be completed during the Fellowship.

Two letters of reference, at least one being academic, should be sent directly to Chatham House by referees before the application deadline.
