FAIR TRADE ADVOCACY OFFICE
The Fair Trade Advocacy Office (FTAO) speaks out on behalf of the Fair Trade movement for Fair Trade and Trade Justice with the aim to improve the livelihoods of marginalised producers and workers in the South. The FTAO is a joint initiative of Fairtrade International, the European Fair Trade Association and the World Fair Trade Organization-Europe. Through these three networks the FTAO represents an estimate of 2.5 million Fair Trade producers and workers from 70 countries, 24 labelling initiatives, over 500 specialised Fair Trade importers, 4,000 World Shops and more than 100,000 volunteers. WE ARE LOOKING FOR …
We are looking for a highly motivated, well-organised yet flexible person, able to work under pressure, with a high level of diplomatic skills, able to work independently and in a small team, manage her/his own time and work priorities and able to work on different issues and activities and carry out a wide diversity of tasks.
KEY AREAS OF WORK
Project Management (40%)
  • To lead in the development, strategy drafting, coordination and fundraising for a new FTAO-led
  • Fair Trade movement campaign (in development phase) on addressing imbalances of power in supply chains
  •  To produce common tools for the campaign (to be adapted by Fair Trade actors to the national / local context)
  •  To organise campaign activities and campaign coordination meetings
  •  When external funds are obtained, manage grant budget, coordinate reporting and compliance with donor requirements
  • To line-manage an intern
Policy & advocacy (40%)
  •  Lead the Fair Trade movement´s advocacy strategy drafting and implementation on EU policies and EU input into global policies, in particular on unfair trading practices, supply chains regulation, EU development policy and the “Beyond 2015” agenda
  •  Coordinate lobby work, involving when appropriate lobby by Fair Trade actors at national level and suggesting appropriate moments for popular mobilization at citizens level (the latter to be implemented by Fair Trade actors)
  •  Draft position papers, write external articles, write internal reports and articles
  •  Relations with EU decision-makers
  •  Networking with relevant civil society organisations and networks
Communications (20%)
  •  Oversee implementation of the FTAO communications strategy and suggest adaptations to better
  • serve to support the FTAO advocacy objectives.
  •  Edit internal monthly advocacy bulletin, quarterly external newsletter, annual report.
  •  Draft occasionally press releases
  •  Ensure FTAO website is always updated on structure and content.
PERSON SPECIFICATIONS
Essential
  •  Educated to bachelors level in a relevant field (e.g. Political Science, Economics, Law or International Development)
  •  Proven advocacy strategy drafting skills
  •  Proven project management skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of EU Institutions and proven experience of working to influence EU policies
  •  Excellent strategic thinking and analytical skills
  •  Excellent spoken and written English
  •  Excellent networking and communications skills
  •  Able to work in a small team and independently with people from different cultural backgrounds.
  •  Flexibility, ability to work under pressure, improvise and multi-task
  •  Computer skills (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point)
