The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Southeast Region Construction division is seeking an experienced Engineering Associate to join our team to help us Get Alaska Moving!

This position functions as a Project Engineer on construction projects in the Southeast Region Construction Section. The Southeast Region Construction Section manages all the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) construction projects from Ketchikan to Yakutat and includes roads, bridges, airports, ferry terminals, seaplane bases, and buildings.

Project Engineers assure that the construction contractor's work complies with the contract documents. They deal directly with contractors, resource agencies, local governments, adjacent property owners and businesses, and the general public. This position is located in Ketchikan; however, most construction seasons require long-term travel to communities throughout Southeast Region.

DESIRED ATTRIBUTES: (it is not necessary to meet all these attributes, but some combination of these attributes is desirable)

o A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (preferably Civil Engineering),
o Experience reading, reviewing, and interpreting construction plans and specifications,
o Experience inspecting the work of, or working for, a heavy construction contractor,
o Experience or education in at least two of the following areas: heavy construction practices, surveying, construction materials testing, or construction inspection,
o Familiarity with Federal Highway Administration or Federal Aviation Administration construction requirements and the necessary inspection documentation,
o Experience dealing with water quality issues, wetlands issues, or fish/wildlife issues, as they relate to construction projects,
o Working knowledge of construction materials testing procedures (WAQTC, AASHTO, or ASTM Test Methods) and documentation,
o Good communication skills (oral and written), and
o Ability to establish and maintain good rapport with people who have differing points of view.

Requires:

Eight years of progressively responsible work experience in engineering, land surveying or architecture, of which one year was as an Engineering Assistant III with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution:
ABET accredited college or technical school courses in engineering, architecture, land surveying or a closely related curriculum may be substituted for the non-specific required experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month). A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET may substitute for four years of the non-specific required experience.
