Energy Charter Secretariat Legal Counsel (A3)


The Energy Charter Secretariat, located in Brussels, serves the Energy Charter Conference and assists the member states in the implementation of the Energy Charter Treaty.
The Energy Charter Treaty, which entered into force in April 1998, includes more than 50 member states and 25 observer states; most of them in the Eurasian continent. The Treaty establishes a legal framework for international energy cooperation in the areas of investment, trade, transit, and energy efficiency.
The Energy Charter Secretariat is currently engaged in an important and challenging exercise to modernise the Energy Charter process and invites applications for the position of:
Legal Counsel (A3)
The successful candidate, who will be an experienced, first-class lawyer, is expected to take up duties in the summer of 2013. He/She will work under the direct authority of the Secretary General and will advise on all legal aspects of the Energy Charter Treaty and Related Instruments, as well as on all other legal issues relevant to the operation of the Secretariat.
A good knowledge of the functioning of international organisations and particular experience in the main areas covered by the Energy Charter Treaty (investment, transit and trade) are key requirements for the successful
candidate, as well as strong analytical skills, convincing oral and written communication skills, proven drafting ability and excellent proficiency in English.
An excellent law degree and at least six years of proven professional experience are pre-requisites for this position, together with the ability to function well in a multinational environment and to be a good team player.
The post (at level A3 on the Coordinated Organisations assessment scale), with an attractive, tax-free remuneration package, is offered on the basis of a three-year, fixed-term contract with the possibility of renewal.
