Job opportunities for economists in the European Commission

The European Commission is looking for high calibre and experienced professionals to steer the direction of the economy of the EU. The UK has the right type of economist that can add value in crucial areas of EU economic governance and analysis. There are vacancies for experts in macro-economics and financial economics at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Economical and Financial Affairs (DG ECFIN) and Internal Market (MARKT) Directorates of the European Commission.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office would like to invite economists interested in working in Brussels to attend a briefing in central London on 22 March to discuss upcoming opportunities for working in the European Commission. Macro-economic stream:

Nature of duties: Successful candidates would be expected to fill posts in ECFIN in teams that conduct macro-economic adjustment programmes, the design/implementation of new approaches to economic governance in the European Monetary Union (both as desk officers who conduct the surveillance and in the horizontal units which develop the analytical tools and methodologies underpinning the surveillance). They would also be expected to work on the preparation of the Commission’s regular forecasts.

Eligibility: DG ECFIN is looking for candidates with degrees (preferably post-graduates) in macro-economics, preferably with finance, applied macro-economics, or quantitative analysis. Among other duties successful candidates would be expected to conduct economic analysis and forecasts, and macro-economic adjustment programmes, design and implement new approaches to economic governance in EMU.

Financial economics

Nature of duties: Successful candidates would be expected to fill posts in ECFIN to analyse financial institutions and markets in member states benefitting from a macro-economic adjustment programme. They would be expected to monitor and analyse the functioning of financial markets, the development and application of methodologies and tools for processing and interpreting financial, monetary and economic data, and the creation of financial instruments or special purpose vehicles to support the implementation of EU policies.

Eligibility: post-graduate in economics or finance, preferably with financial economics, corporate finance, statistics, or quantitative analysis. Among other duties successful candidates would be expected to conduct economic analysis and analyse financial institutions, markets and financial instruments in Member States and the eurozone.
