South Pacific Business Development Summer Intern


The South Pacific Business Development (SPBD) Microfinance Network is the leading microfinance/microenterprise development organization operating in the Pacific Islands. SPBD improves the quality of life of low-income families by providing training, unsecured credit and ongoing guidance and motivation to help women start and grow micro-businesses. They provide low-income families with access to convenient savings and insurance facilities and help them to finance home improvements and childhood education.
About the Job: 
SPBD is looking for a Summer Intern. S/he will assist the general manager (GM) of SPBD Tonga to perform a detailed market analysis of the main sectors and businesses SPBD supports, namely: fishing, weaving, tapa cloth making, pig and chicken farming, and plantation development. S/he will perform a deep dive into understanding the business cycles/patterns of each business and its cash flow characteristics.
Tasks and Responsibilities: 
  • Conduct market analysis of each business sector to gage the size and sustainability of these markets, including a detailed SWOT analysis. The resulting deliverable will be no more than 3-4 pages for each market;
  • Create mini-financial models to fully understand the business cycles and cash flow characteristics of each type of business;
  • Investigate whether SPBD should design and offer a new/different loan product to enable its clients to be more successful;
  • Spend time fully understanding the operations, processes, and current products of SPBD by performing field visits to meet clients and interviews with staff;
  • Provide updates to the GM through field reports over e-mail and when possible in person;
  • Perform any other projects required.
Qualifications: 
  • MBA/MA in Finance, International Development - student or Graduate;
  • Coursework or professional experience in credit, microfinance, finance, banking, or consulting;
  • Excellent communication (writing and speaking) skills in English. Must be able to express thoughts and opinions clearly and concisely;
  • Proven ability to work independently;
  • Experience working in developing country environments;
  • Ability to speak Tongan a plus, but not necessary.
