Economists (x2), International Finance Division, Bank of England
We are looking to recruit two experienced economists to join the Bank of England’s International Finance Division (IFD).
IFD is responsible for the Bank’s international macro-financial analysis – assessing risks to UK financial stability arising from advanced economy financial systems, emerging markets, and the global flow of funds, and for seeking means of improving the robustness of the international monetary and financial system (IMFS).  It is part of the Financial Stability directorate, which supports the Bank’s new Financial Policy Committee.
One of the successful candidates will join the Policy Team, whose key responsibilities are to assess the challenges and risks to today’s IMFS; and to develop and champion ideas on how to make the system more stable and to reduce the costs of crises when they arise.  The jobholder will engage actively in the G20 and IMF agendas on IMFS reform, with issues currently including how to improve the surveillance of the global financial and monetary system, how to resolve sovereign crises when they occur, and the proper use of capital controls.
The other will join the Capital Flows and Emerging Markets Team.  The jobholder will be involved in activities including: assessing the risks to UK financial stability from particular EME countries and regions; expanding our understanding of the global flow of funds; developing our toolkit for analysing international banking and capital flows; and gathering intelligence from market participants.
The roles provide an exciting and challenging variety of responsibilities, the exact mix of which will depend on the jobholder’s skills and experience.  We are looking for candidates with strong analytical skills and the ability to convert theory into practical advice for policymakers. In both cases, a key aspect of the job is to communicate our ideas, analysis and policy recommendations within and outside the Bank.  Both teams are also responsible for pushing forward the Bank’s research agenda in international finance.
The successful candidates should:
• Be an excellent economist, with a strong analytical background,  including very good post graduate qualifications in economics/finance and/or previous relevant work experience (e.g. in another policymaking institution or the private sector)
• Have an intellectual curiosity and in interest in international finance
• Have an ability to communicate complex ideas concisely to non-specialists, verbally and in writing
• An aptitude for translating economic analysis into policy recommendations
• Ability to work autonomously and in teams
