Description:The Racial Justice Program of the ACLU's National office in New York City seeks applications for the full-time position of Legal Administrative Assistant.

OVERVIEW
The Racial Justice Program (RJP) attorneys and staff work on a broad range of racial justice issues, particularly in the areas of criminal justice and education. In the area of criminal justice, it is dedicated to reducing the unwarranted and disproportionate targeting and incarceration of people of color. In the area of education, the Program seeks to ensure that all children have access to quality education, regardless of race or ethnicity. Specifically, RJP has filed civil challenges to the inadequate provision of indigent criminal and juvenile defense, racial profiling, and disparate educational opportunities, and advocate against the racially-disproportionate imposition of incarceration and school discipline.
The Legal Administrative Assistant will be an integral part of the RJP team and will have the opportunity to attend staff meetings and learn about strategies for protecting the rights of communities of color.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

? Handle general administrative duties for the Program including processing invoices, tracking expenses and case costs, preparing expense reports, ordering supplies, petty cash, etc.
? Proofread and edit legal documents; edit and mail briefs.
? Answer telephones, take messages and route calls; respond to written and verbal inquiries.
? Conduct research using various research vehicles, including legal databases, internet sources and interviews.
? Maintain a professional and user-friendly office filing system; update various mailing lists.
? Schedule meetings and conference calls; prepare meeting materials; take minutes in meetings and conference calls related to cases; make travel arrangements.
? Fax, copy, mail and complete other general office duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

? Bachelor's degree or 2 years of experience providing administrative support in an office setting.
? Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and WordPerfect.
? Experience conducting internet research.
? Must be self-motivated and able to multi-task and meet deadlines.
? Strong organizational, interpersonal, and administrative skills.
? Strong telephone, writing, proofreading and verbal communication skills.
? A commitment to the mission and goals of the ACLU.

COMPENSATION

Salary for this position is $41,586. A generous benefits package is provided.
