Description:SEIU, Local 500 is a progressive labor union, organizing and representing over 16,000 workers in the public service in Maryland and Washington, DC.

We are a proud affiliate of Service Employees International Union (SEIU), fastest growing union in North America. We have an immediate opening for a Member Strength Organizer. Member Strength Organizers are responsible for building our organization internally. Responsibilities include identifying, recruiting and mobilizing activists and leaders to support the union's agenda for addressing large systemic problems that workers encounter in their work place. A Member Strength Organizer is responsible for supporting the union's leadership as we continue to strengthen our member-driven union.

This is an internal organizing position, not a traditional representational role. This position requires good organizing and communication skills, an ability to write well, and a willingness to work long, often irregular hours?including weekends and evenings. Applicants need to be self- starters and have the ability to develop campaigns and work with minimal supervision. Strategic thinking and great interpersonal skills are a must. This position will require an organizer to work throughout the Metropolitan DC area and some parts of Maryland, including possibly Baltimore.
Member Strength Organizers work with a variety of workers in different industries and work sites.
Successful Member Strength organizers are flexible, able to think on their feet and have a healthy sense of humor.

Two to three years experience with another labor union or nonprofit organization as an organizer is preferred. We offer an excellent starting salary and fringe benefit package. An applicant for this position must demonstrate basic written and good verbal communication skills, basic computer knowledge, and a commitment to social justice and the labor movement.

Applicants must have their own car (a car stipend is provided). The ability to speak Spanish is also preferred.
